I have a hazy memory. I remember him coming in for charles brown and immediately being better than him. That doesn't mean shite but then add to that he was a 3rd round (oh sry you invalidated this lol), track star roll of the dice, I don't remember ever thinking, "shite we fked up"

I don't remember much negativity towards Armstread. He came in against St Louis and got taught a few lessons, but everyone was glad to see Charles Brown out of there. We knew he was a project and needed reps.

I don't think using Armstead as an example works for this argument.

It certainly does.

He needed experience and got absolutely worked when he started playing. That didn't mean he was a bust for not being able to beat out Brown earlier.

A year later he turned into one of the best LTs in the NFL.

His first half against Carolina was one of the worst performances in the Payton era, but he rebounded nicely from that learning experience

I remember a certain LT of ours...what was it? Armstead? He started out REALLY REALLY bad as well.

The eye test would have said, dude sucked arse because frankly he got his shite pushed into him.

now the excuse is, "well yeah he was a 3rd rounder!" blah blahh blah

The first game he got significant playing time was against the Rams after Brown was benched in the game, and Armstead was forced to go up against Robert Quinn.

What are you talking about?

Drew Brees looked ok in spurts (2nd round pick QB, it's expected to not be great), Peyton Manning had bad stats but everyone and their mother knew he was fantastic, Jimmy Graham was a third round pick so even if he had a rough rookie year (he didn't by the way) it's expected from a third rounder, Delvin Breaux's rookie NFL year was last year and he was pretty awesome, and I don't know anything about Strief.

All in all, you picked some really shitty people to make a point with.

Everyone keeps saying this

Armstead had 0 snaps against the Rams.

His first NFL snap came in the starting role against Carolina

No, Chargers drafted Eli then traded him.

Traded to Giants and got Rivers with the first round pick they got from the Giants in the swap.

I'll admit it, I was shouting to get him the hell out of the game. He was a turnstile that first game.

Peat played all 4 positions except center. Every position needs different technique. Saints are lucky have multi position player. Once he settles at RT next year. He will great one for this team for next 10 years.

the worse 1st round draft in saints history

I would have to go:

1. Russell Erxleben
2. Shawn Knight

There are others but I don't have time. I hope Peat doesn't make this list but at minimum he should not have gone in the first round.

This thread is dumb as shite.

-Peat is being worked at multiple positions and it's unfair considering he's not getting the time he needs to develop in what everyone knows he should be -- a T.

-Peat got worked by a pretty good DE in Long who when not injured has shown he's a fairly good pass rusher

-Peat played well when he was at T last year

-It was a preseason game

-Armstead argument absolutely applies here. He got his arse handed to him multiple times and it wasn't until the playoff game against Seattle did he solidify himself as an elite LT past that point. It was like the light clicked on for him all at once. People only forget it so fast because Brown was so shitty they were happy to see Armstead in even with his own struggles.

Absolutely dumb to call this guy a bust. Let a season play out where we actually can see what he's capable of doing and where his development goes. Jesus. Overreact much over a single preseason game and the first one at that?

I think that Philly game was the first stepping stone of his confidence into an elite LT when Trent Cole talked all that shite and he shut him up quick.

Armstead's literally had one bad half in his first start on the road in Carolina against prime Greg Hardy. He's been more than rock solid ever since

The Armstead argument absolutely does not apply

Yeah but Seattle was a much more dangerous defense with a great overall front seven. His side was like a wall in that game. You're not wrong but I think Seattle was the game where he really solidified he'd be a great LT in this league.

Too bad the Collins camp(his own agent) said and I quote..."If you draft him after the second round we won't sign".

Personally I wouldve pulled his card. I drafted you, your arse is mine. Play or retire

That isn't it works.

He wouldn't have to retire, just sit out the season.

Personally, I still think it would have been worth a 7th rounder from some team. The whole thing is odd

I'm going to write, produce and star in a short film about what it would have been like if we took La'el Collins in the 7th round. Hopefully it'll give you guys some closure.

And is HC.

You draft a player, you own his rights. Him sitting out a season or retiring doesnt change that. If it were that easy many players drafted by suckhole teams would be doing this on a regular basis.

Now as a team you can pull a SD and take a player who you know you can flip for multiple or a high pick in the next draft.
