We REALLY need to hit on this draft. Just like we REALLY needed to in 2017.

We still pushed more dead cap onto 2024.

We should have cut him to eat it now with all the cap space we cleared for 2023. There wasn't a need to use his contract to clear more space.

That would be dumb. They are still trying to sign free agents. Push it to future years where the cap will go up.

They were going to have to take the hit eventually. It's better to be spread out with the void years then all at once in 2023.

MT back,

I'm happy we got him back. He took a big paycut in 2023. If he does well, he won't in 2024 , so it's a double-edged sword. I want him to do well but that makes things difficult.

Actually he has the same exact contract. The difference is the 5 mil he has to make back in incentives.

Excellent post. Terrible draft pick - never was suited for LT which is what is was drafted for.

has a poison pill in 2025 so we'll either have to cut him (if he's not good) and somehow eat $60-70M in dead money or extend him (into his late 30s). Extending him only fixes things temporarily, b/c in that scenario when he retires, we'll have a huge 40-80M dead cap hit waiting.

This isn't true.

When the cap goes up contracts will go up. Sure we will have better rates on our previously-signed deals, but we will still be hampered in signing FAs or re-signing our own guys.

When he's cut, it's all accelerated to when he's cut.

that's why Davenport and Onyamata have such big cap impacts this year when their void years include 2023. All the cap hits that were spread out over the void years hit us for 2023 b/c we didn't re-sign them.

What part isn't true? I was looking at his cap impacts while making the post.

Some of the amounts are estimates but I tried to give a range guessing how much of his 2024 base gets converted to signing bonus.

No. This should be his last year and he'll be a $13.6M cap hit next year.

It's crazy to me how everyone is getting so worked up about you pointing out how bad our cap mismanagement continues to be under Loomis.

It's something the entire board agrees on during the season, but soon as FA rolls around and he does the same can kicking as every other year, suddenly everyone isn't worried about it anymore

I thought he'd be cut to get out from under him quicker too. What makes it hard to assess tho is team has intel on his health more so than we get as fans. maybe they got clean medicals finally. guys like Peat, MT, Ram all have pro bowl upside so at current cap hit, it has upside for good value. downside tho is if they face more injuries, people will say like "how'd u not see that coming?" it's kinda damned if u do and damned if u don't so, I'm hoping it's more based on good intel like improved medicals. Either way, I don't think it changes draft strategy. We're still going to look for iOL with one of our 1st two picks I'd think.

to me that means this will be Mickey Loomis' last yr as GM. I think we're going to have Khai Harley take over for him next season.

This is the most annoying shite ever when trying to hold an in-depth conversation.

If you can't be bothered to defend your position, I just assume you're FOS.

I don't know if what SFP says is correct or is what will happen(even though I have the same gut feeling), but at least he shows his work.

Offseason is optimism season.

I mean it's theoretically possible that 2023 could be a great year. We need insane injury luck (with an injury-prone and aging roster), Carr playing at a level he's only played at once or twice, Carmichael and Allen to make major leaps in their roles, AK returning to his self from 3+ years ago and delaying his suspension, and somehow we create an elite DL.

If all those things can happen we may be able to make noise in the NFC, and if we get lucky with other teams getting injured, maybe we could have a miracle run in the playoffs and make the super bowl. It is theoretically possible.

And I would argue the saints and loomis have been pretty successful at doing this. Every year the media and people here tell us we’re in cap hell and every year we make it work. Quit worrying about it.

Post 2019?

That was the inflection point with the Brees contract creating the cap issues and can kicking.

Ok you said it again. Aging roster. Last year we were middle of the pack age wise. Are there new figures out that show us as a very old team? If so please share I have not seen it.
All rosters are Aging.

From last year b/c FA/the draft aren't done for 2023

quote:

Research from the Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski found that New Orleans ranked 29th across the league, with an average age of players on their 53-man roster of 26.8. Only the New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers ranked lower based off initial 53-man lineups.

How’s that the case? New Orleans rostered nine players over the age of 30, including starters like Cameron Jordan and Demario Davis (33) plus Tyran Mathieu and James Hurst (30). Other veterans expected to play often include Mark Ingram II and Taysom Hill (32), as well as Bradley Roby (30). There a couple of 30-plus backups, too, in Andy Dalton (34, eldest on the team) and Daniel Sorensen (32). They didn’t factor into this exercise, but two players on the practice squad also passed that threshold — Josh Andrews (31) and Christian Ringo (30).

We're old at a lot of key positions, too. Carr, AK (for a RB), Cam, Davis, to go with other elderly guys like Taysom. 30+ club this year includes Maye, Thomas, Peat (turns 30 during the year), and Mathieu. We signed 2 young DTs but an old RB.

Thanks.
Maybe the needle moves a little bit but wouldn't expect much change.
Scary that of the 6 youngest teams only 1 made the playoffs..
