"I think (a decision from Brees) is coming in the next week or two," Payton said. "There's a wear and tear in these years, especially at that position. I think that's something in the next week, week and a half, he's going to address and announce. Meanwhile, we're meeting -- most teams, right, at the end of the season, you meet on your own roster. You spend a good portion of the week going through each player, talking about the season, where they're at, where they're going. We've gone through the quarterbacks. Of course we've read all of those players. Taysom Hill, who's in the building. Jameis, who's a free agent, who we hope to sign here, sooner or later. We've got a pretty good vision with those players. I think within the next week we'll know a little bit more."
quote:

"We had a great exposure, for one year, with Jameis Winston. And, you know, we didn't have a normal offseason, but we had enough time to see what we had with him as a player, as a leader, as an athlete. I really like what we had a chance to see. He was a tremendous leader for this team, and that's hard to do when you come in new in free agency, your first year, as a backup quarterback ... A lot of times you wanna hold your cards closer to the vest, and he is a free agent, but him along with Taysom Hill, who's in the building ... we've said it all along (that they'd be options)."

I wonder if the reason the Saints didn't play Winston in the regular season because they didn't want to drive his price up and create a big interest from other teams.

Payton has to be resigned to the fact that Taysom is probably not a viable option. The more he played, the more that became apparent. I wanted it to be Taysom until his audition this year but no more. Winston is intriguing and scary at the same time. With QB situation and salary cap issues, Payton and Loomis are about to earn their money! It could get ugly in the short-term.

Yep
Rolling with Jameis
Do you try and trade Taysom?
He's not going to like his role as the backup.

He can say whatever he wants, but he got paid to be a do-it-all guy who cannot play QB at this level.

The decision making, turnover-prone habits, and long windup is gonna ruin us if we keep him as starter

He's making 16 mil this year. I doubt he cares.

IMO Payton needs to address his resentment towards LSU players and why he has never drafted or signed one.

Agreed, and if he's playing more of a dual-QB role than he was with Brees he may be smart enough to realize that this is going to be as good as it gets for him as a QB in this league.

The Saints were 7-2 at the time Brees went down, trying to stay ahead of Tampa for the division and catch/pass GB for the ONLY bye in the playoffs. The NFL is far too competitive for a team to sit a guy who they think is the better QB just to "hide" him for the future. Particularly a team that was "all in" on trying to get a championship in what was pretty well know (though not spoken) to be their HOF QB's final season.

They started Hill because they thought he gave them the better chance to win. Now maybe they don't think Hill is the future after watching him start 4 games. I don't know. But I can PROMISE they didn't keep Winston out just because they were hoping to sign him for cheap next season.

Y’all are delusional af if you think Sean Payton is that smart or if the saints are ever going to win another championship under his stubborn reign.

In what fricking world would and NFL coach not play who is better “to not drive up market value?” That’s one of the most far out and absurd things I have ever read.

Could easily see Brees announcing another year because he can get healthy and this past season(s), luck was not on his side with the injuries.

Payton promised Hill a legit shot at starting Should Brees go down

Without preseason and that promise along with Winston getting Covid the only answer was Hill.

Winston, Kamara, Thomas, Harris, Sanders, Saints OL with Payton calling the shots is still a top 10 offense

This is exactly what I would say to the media if for next year I never intend to start one of the QBs already in the organization.

If Brees retires, which we all know he will, we need to get a QB in free agency if we want any shot of another SuperBowl in the next few years.

This is reaching imo. We were a Super Bowl contender. I doubt Sean didn’t play the best player for potential free agency bid on Jamies Winston.

Idk man. That team was picking 5th last year with Winston running the show and now they’re in the super bowl with Good, not great, QB play

He just couldn't stop fumbling. I've never seen anything like it. At least once per game he just lost the ball. Its no good having a running qb if 1-2 fumbles is all but guaranteed every game.

Where would he think he's getting traded to to be a starting QB?

I think there's some truth to this. But even more so I think it's because Sean places a high value on guys who have had more time to learn the offense at that position. Especially in a year with a shortened training camp, no pre-season, etc. Also, QBs who can run are easier to incorporate short term into an offense because of their ability to just run when a play breaks down.
