I don’t know if this is what you are referring to but LINK he left his family in Dallas when he took the Saints job, not wanting to pull his kids out of schools makes sense, note the comments about the quality of schools and crime (this is 2011) are NOT quotes but moments by the writer. No indication, from this article at least that Payton actually said it. In any event Payton could easily afford send his kids to Newman, Newman is a very good school, better I would guess than even the public schools in Plano though more expensive at best it’s just an excuse to blame schools to keep his kids in the DFW area.

Dude he had never been a HC, he was stripped of play calling as OC with the Giants in 2002 and was QB coach with Dallas. But again post Katrina it was very different, not doubt a lot of people were skeptical of coming to the Saints at that time.

when was that? I realize crime has increased the last couple of years but that’s relative to 5-10 years ago. the murder rate is way below the peaks of the mid 90s. There’s lots if areas thst better now than pre Katrina even (look at all the craft breweries on Tchoupitoulas for example that was no man’s land in the 70s and 80s)

Couple of points, he mentioned visiting and thinking it was a place to visit and not raise a family, a lot of people have said that about NOLA especially since they usually visit the FQ and are in NOLA for big parties. No one visiting has any reason to look at private schools for example. But he also clearly discussed Katrina and issues around that, which I’ve mentioned, it was a unique outlier. I also forgot he’s from Chicago which makes the Packers angle make more sense and as the interviewer mentioned it is an historic franchise.

The point about the schools is, someone in his income bracket will not send his kids to the inner city schools, anywhere. Most big cities the schools are terrible. Was he sending his kids to public schools in Dallas? I seriously doubt it, they were most likely out in Plano or Frisco or one of big Suburbs.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter if it was his or someone’s first choice. Lots of people took jobs that weren’t their first choice. That doesn’t mean you can’t get a good coach. And yes it will be an up and comer, most NFL hires are. Coaches with Payton’s current resume are pretty rare.

I don’t necessarily agree with that. But Issues like education and crime are not new, if long term it’s not conducive to have an NFL team in New Orleans it will be due-to bigger issues than the “current” trajectory. However, I have seen it discussed that Mrs Benson (vilified by many on here btw ) will insist on keeping the team in New Orleans as part of her will, we will see.

This is just a strawman, no one is “apologizing” for anything. I’m simply saying whatever hot buttons issues there are do not affect coaching candidates at least in the zero sum way you are making it out. New Orleans is not the only the only city with “rising” crime and shitty schools. Coaches make enough to send their kids to private schools and live in safer neighborhoods or suburbs with better schools and little crime.

As a side note, the fact that Payton didn’t want the job only proves my point. Someone will take it, if it’s because it’s his only option who cares? There’s only 32 of these jobs and 7-8 openings a year a best. It isn’t college where coaches routinely jump to bigger jobs, this situation with Payton is extremely rare. Most NFL hires are first time head coaches (Ryans) or recycled guys that got fired elsewhere (Reich). It’s up to the franchise to make the right hire and that has nothing to do with the “current trajectory” on issues like crime but rather the competence of the GM/President or whoever is making the hire.
