Source: Alex Okafor can opt out of final year of contract LINK via @theadvocateno

Of course he will opt out of his contract. Will be missed, but Davenport must start next year. Trey as the backup.

Yeah that's not happening. He has all of 4 sacks this year and it's looking like the $4.85 mil we are paying him next year is an overpay.

In 5 less games last year he had 3 more batted passes, 2 more forced fumbles, half a sack more, 8 more total tackles, and the same amount of tackles for a loss and QB Hits.

So in only 2/3rds of games played last year he had equal or better production than this year.

No way he comes close to $5 mil on the open market. He'd be an idiot for opting out, and in fact he may likely be cut (or take a pay cut) as he saves $4.1 mil on the cap (with only $750k dead money).

Edit:
We knew he had an opt out option when he signed that was tied to sacks.

That number being only 3 sacks is stupidly low for a guy that would be looking for more than $4.25 mil (the minimum number he will likely earn if he plays all 16 games next year).

Also, we'd be smart to sit him this game as he'd cost another mil on the cap if he got another sack. Not worth it in a meaningless game.

So he will not take a multi-year contact with probably more guaranteed money and stay for the one year.

Yeah right.

Do you think anyone else would offer him more than a one year deal?

IF we don't cut him or "make" him take a pay cut, he is NOT getting more than $4 mil even on a two year deal, if he even gets a multi year offer.

We're talking maybe a 3 year, $6 mil vs. a 1 year $4-5 mil deal.

It's a no fricking brainer to stay another year. He's not going to get better, and that's if we don't cut him.

That is usually a bad look when trying to bring in FA or resign guys. They may be less inclined to sign for a lower contract w/ incentives if we make sure they don't hit them.

Plus, I would rather have Cam not dress out and have him & Hendrickson start while Davenport continues his normal rotation.

Yes, you incompetent idiot. Defensive ends that can play the run and rush the passer are a rare breed on the open market.

Okafor has a very good year for being a part time player.

It would be smart if we don't expect or need him back next year. To do that to a player who you consider good on the field and in the locker room while looking for him to contribute the next year I'm not sure is so smart.

I'd probably keep Okafor for 4.85 mil. He should be in MUCH better shape going into 2019 (as opposed to 2018). It took him like half of the year to finally look normal again.

He might be a little overpaid, but I'd do a paycut at the very worst. I'd be surprised if his 2019 season isn't better than his 2018 season.

I think he is worth paying that. Very good depth on the DL IMO.

He can opt out and still return.

He’s came on down the stretch. Was a non factor early on but that’s a tough injury

Usually takes 2 seasons to get right from an injury like that

Would love to keep him and watch Dport get even better.

But the development of Hendrickson is intriguing to me too. He's got real talent. But cant be on the gameday roster b/c he doesn't play special teams.
