Seriously, the difference between our 3rd string RT and our "Hi, I'm here cause nobody else has legs anymore" RT can't be that huge.

Wrong. If the DE stayed outside, the QB would've let the handoff go to the RB inside. The QB reads the DE and the other players fill in the gaps around him.
