A new QB in Carolina: The #Panthers are acquiring former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield from the #Browns for a 2024 conditional 5th-round draft pick, sources tell me and @TomPelissero. Deal is pending a physical. All parties split the financials to make it happen. https://t.co/xuTLqosmZm

So the falcons and the panthers will be fun this season.

Probably not a bad take by Carolina. The Browns were backed into a corner and had no choice but to essentially give him away.

Carolina doesn't have anything at QB now. It's worth a shot to see if a guy who has at least had moments of success can do something in a new place. If it doesn't work out, Carolina goes from a losing team to a...losing team.

Cleveland has long be a mess. But Mayfield had FAR too much hubris and lack of accountability on his part. Maybe facing the reality that his old team had to essentially pay someone else to take him will humble him a little bit.

Baker had an all pro offensive line, two of the best RBs in the game, great receivers and a great defense in Cleveland, and he couldn't even be an average QB. He is going to be as bad as Darnold in Carolina, because he sucks like Darnold.

My thoughts as well. Great gamble by Carolina; not giving up a lot, but if he gets it together has the physical tools to be an above average QB

And if Carolina gave up multiple high draft picks and agreed to pay all of Mayfield's salary it would be a terrible deal. However, they aren't. They are kicking the tires on a guy who has had moments of success for a relatively low price. If he is "as bad as Darnold" then they are really no worse off. It's a fairly low risk signing. If it doesn't work out Carolina goes from crap to still being crap.

Or to put it another way. If the Saints had Darnold as their presumptive starter and could make this deal the board would be celebrating gleefully

I mean he had 2 pretty good seasons in Cleveland (rookie year and 3rd year). the other 2 years not so much, but he was never really terrible there.

Certainly much better than Darnold has ever been. This is was a pretty amazing move for Carolina to get him for basically a throwaway draft pick. They are getting a 4 year NFL starting QB (last 4 years) for a 'conditional' 5th round pick...and Baker certainly isnt terrible. Worst case they just upgraded their QB position by a bit losing a future 5th rounder.

Good deal for Carolina. Mayfield may not be an all time great, but he is an upgrade over Darnold. And the cost there is cheap.

I would have rather them have had to start Darnold.

In Charlotte? Not exactly the poster-child for overly passionate fandom.

There’s already a petition to replace the Sam Mills statue with one of McCaffrey
