quote:My guess he is comparing the two as far as type of signings. Goodwin was a relative unknown who had played well in spurts for the Jets I believe. Easton is young and relatively unknown as well and has shown some promise in spurts.
Mike D compares Easton to Jonathan Goodwin.

This signing was just as much about replacing Peat next year as it is about Unger this year. Easton gives Clapp and Tom another year to develop to see if they can take over in 2020. We will need good, cheap starting players wherever we can get them with the huge contracts we have coming.

also both with versatile interior OL backgrounds. Its a valid comparison.

Saints never should have let Kelemete walk. The 3 year $12 million contract he signed in Houston would be a steal right now for us and he could have just slid into Unger’s spot.

Supposedly Minnesota was actively trying to re-sign him so they weren't worried with injury issues along with the other teams interested in his services. I think they were trying to low ball him and the Saints made a large enough offer to make him jump. The Vikes cap money is tight. I can tell you the Vikings didn't really want to lose him and their fans and media aren't happy. Good.

The saints didn’t let Kelemente walk, they would have matched the deal but he wanted the opportunity to be a starter.

Like who?
I admittedly know nothing about Easton first hand, so I'm just going off of what I am reading about him. Do I wish we could have landed him for cheaper? Sure, but the truth is he is a bit of an unknown. Here is a good read on him when he was acquired by the Vikings including scouting profiles leading up to when he was drafted.
LINK
It seems like he played center in college and was a backup center with Baltimore, 49ers, and the Vikings early on. He seems like he was one of those players that was good enough to start at center for the Vikings, but they had an equal-better option, so they kicked him to guard. He hurt his ankle and the next year hurt his neck in training camp.
In general, IMO the most important quality for a center is the ability to make the correct pass protection calls. He went to Harvard and was their starting center. I like his chances there. Next is pass protection. He didn't give up a sack as a starting guard for the Vikings, so I like his chances there. I would put run blocking as last for a center to be honest. They are USUALLY going to either chip, double, and/or get to the second level in run blocking.
Really health is my number one concern for him at this point.

I doubt they knew. Unger wanted that bonus. He collected and quit on us. I get it’s business but it’s bullshite.
They were saying on ESPN that the Saints likely have known all year and told him to announce after they inked the Easton Deal. I think Brees taking a cut > Unger retiring > Signing Easton was planned out weeks ago. Him taking his bonus was more than likely worked out as well.

Reading comments from viqueens fans and most of them say we overpaid due to injury concerns. Saints know OL like the back of their hands so I'm not worried.
Vikings fans say that and yet they now only have one guard on their roster. Six million a year for a starting interior lineman really isn't that much -- probably middle of the pack in terms of average league salary.

Ohh yeah the contract is great if he starts and plays good.
I do wonder if they have an eye to next year and peat because teams rarely let someone play out the 5th year option if they plan on keeping the player.
Why not just extend peat and dramatically lower his number.
Maybe they want to see if he can stay healthy all year.
Maybe tom will take over at center next year and Easton slides over to lg

He played both guard and center in MN.

I mean honestly, it's a good signing if he's healthy.
Center this year. Possible starting LG next year and Tom takes over at c.

Good grief, I hope the contract gives the Saints an out after the first year. Otherwise, this is the latest Mickey Loomis future dead money signing. Absolutely reactionary and completely abysmal. A bad player coming off a horrible injury history signed to a big money deal. The Saints front office does so well most of the time but they always seem to make one or two bone headed decisions that haunt them for years
LOL. Wtf. What in the world are u looking at to suggest he's a "bad player". That is plain ignorance. Injuries are a valid concern but saying he's a bad football player is fricking stupid.
