Did Goodell trademark the FDL? Talk about acting like a commie

The National Football League is demanding that local New Orleans lifestyle brand DNO refrain from using its signature logo depicting a fleur-de-lis on the side of a spiked skull on its popular "Defend New Orleans" T-shirts and apparel. In a cease-and-desist letter dated July 17, the NFL claims DNO founder and owner Jac Currie has engaged in the “unauthorized use” of an NFL trademark or mark “confusingly similar thereto.” The fleur-de-lis is the logo of the New Orleans Saints and all logos, names, colors and designs of the 32 NFL teams belong to NFL Properties, the letter says.

I find it hard to not side with Saints/NFL on this one. They are selling a shirt with a helmet and fleur de lis on it w/ New orleans branding.

I said it on the thread on the O-T Lounge, but this isn't a case of them creating their own fleur de lis and using that, they pulled it directly from one of those old helmet svg's and photoshopped it onto their merchandise. The NFL doesn't own fleur-de-lis' but they definitely own Saints previous and current logos.

If they had just created their own this would be a non issue.

Agree with Chad. A fleur on a helmet seems a no go to me.

Agreed.

Didn’t even realize these were that big a thing. Only people I ever saw wearing them were 35 year old unmarried dudes who still played in kickball leagues

Hasn’t this been around since 2005 after Katrina?

Probably about to release an abundance of throwback merch for $110 sweatshirts so they needed to curb anyone else from using it.

This is basically the Saints asking the NFL to cover the C&D so the team doesn’t look like the bad guys.

Nice. Would love some Saints fans to show up to the next NFL draft wearing these shirts. I bet security gives you a choice of removing them or leaving.

*I meant Saints fans and not the players.

The Saints could have partnered up with DNO and licensed the design or something - spreading goodwill, helping a local business…

Or if they don’t give a frick about local business, then I guess they could just do this.

I think you got that backwards. DNO could have approached the Saints about using their design before just taking it.

If it was just a random fleur-de-lis that would be one thing. Instead DNO intentionally took the design for profit without asking.

I know a little about trademarks, and I’d be surprised if that so-called “trademark” will withstand a challenge.

Not sure why anyone would downvote this. It’s the obvious choice.

It’s literally a skull with a FDL that looks nothing like what’s on the Saints football helmets. I have to emphatically disagree with you on this one.

Except the team still has ownership to the old logos and is using it this season on merch.
