#Saints WR Michael Thomas drops nothing, catches everything, gains elite yardage after he does so, & scores on par with every other elite WR in the game. He also now carries a $20.4M valuation (5 years, $102M) as he becomes extension-eligible.

love to see the thread all the rimrods going out on a limb and were "willing to give him a 14-16 mill a year" type deal...

Yeah, the armchair GMs are gonna demand that he gives us the hometown discount because Colston always signed for less than what they thought he was worth.

Let's say drew retires after we win super bowl, do you pay Thomas?

Michael Thomas is worth every penny. He play’s with a Michael Jordan sized chip on his shoulder. In the Jim Trotter article he references how Sean Payton would line up across from the WRs and “jam” them. IIRC, he said that Thomas hit him like a truck. The only other player that prepared like that was Sproles. And Thomas has adequate size and superior strength for the position. He works his arse off. He is a true leader for the WRs and the DBs. I also can see him taking Drew’s replacement under his wing like he did with his QB in HS. He will likely be the highest paid WR in the league once his contract is due. He’s worth every penny.

even i in july who knows we'd have to pay him was thinking/hoping a 5/87 type deal.

we know probably 18.5 is the absolute floor per yr.

Michael is turning 26 in a few months. Will he want a 3 or 4 yr deal to get paid again before he hits 30? That might be a question to ask, maybe saints more comfortable with a shorter type deal.

This

And when has Payton shown the willingness to pay an offensive player not named Drew Brees a giant contract?

But let's worry about that down the line, we gots a SB to win.

Normally I would say, no way should a Sean Payton coached Saints team ever pay a wide receiver that much money. If there's any offense that doesn't need a big name at wide receiver, it's the Saints offense. Sean Payton has been turning chickenshit into chicken salad at the wide receiver position for years now.

BUT....

When it comes to Michael Thomas...

pay that man his money.

1. If there's anybody you don't have to worry about kicking his feet up after he gets paid, it's Michael Thomas. Dude is a legit competitor and while I'm sure the money is important to him it's obvious that that's not why he plays and that's not his motivation.

2. He's worth every penny.

They can and they will. You don't just let that type of talent and production walk out the door.

If the Saints just let Thomas walk the fans would riot.

There is no denying he is going to get paid top WR money next year. It just depends on who is going to be paying him. If Drew comes back, Gayle might have to have a friendly chat about his contract.

On Thomas' TD against the Eagles, he literally boxed out his man, out-muscled him and jumped up to make the catch. That is elite level talent.
