And when has Payton shown the willingness to pay an offensive player not named Drew Brees a giant contract?

We’ve never had one of his talents though. He’s the perfect combo of talent and work ethic. I also don’t think he’s going to decline much as he ages as he isn’t reliant on natural speed. Dude just runs impeccable routes and is physical as hell.

I was absolutely against paying him last summer but the dude pretty much proved to be a one man receiving group at times last season.

Financially and situatinally, it makes no sense.

You tag the wr and figure out details with the qb who's nearing the end of his career.

#Saints WR Michael Thomas drops nothing, catches everything, gains elite yardage after he does so, & scores on par with every other elite WR in the game.

He also now carries a $20.4M valuation (5 years, $102M) as he becomes extension-eligible.

??

I don’t think we will have to franchise Brees either. I just thought it was interesting that outside commentators thought this and that it was mentioned that he might get upwards of $25M/year.

re: Michael Thomas' valuation per Spotrac
Yeah $25 mil per isn't happening, but I can see it creeping towards $22 mil per, which I think would still be tops for a WR.

Yeah that's the range I think he falls in ($20-22), but the sticking point will be the guarantees.

Normally I would say, no way should a Sean Payton coached Saints team ever pay a wide receiver that much money. If there's any offense that doesn't need a big name at wide receiver, it's the Saints offense. Sean Payton has been turning chicken shite into chicken salad at the wide receiver position for years now.

BUT....

When it comes to Michael Thomas...

pay that man his money.

1. If there's anybody you don't have to worry about kicking his feet up after he gets paid, it's Michael Thomas. Dude is a legit competitor and while I'm sure the money is important to him it's obvious that that's not why he plays and that's not his motivation.

2. He's worth every penny.

I tend to agree. He is worth it because you can be sure it won't make him lazy.

Nonsense. Of course you can and they will...after he spends a year on the franchise tag

Pass.

Offense revolves around Brees. Brees wont be here to see out that contract. His production will go down.

if he continues putting up numbers like he has the 1st 2 seasons, i very well could see him getting 16.5-18.5, maybe even upwards of 19 mil/year for 4-6 years...

wasn't too far off...

Further reason to pay him.

Whoever starts Bridgewater or whoever will need a player to help carry this offense. You pay the player based on his value to the offense and not who his QB is. There have been plenty of WRs that ball out with average or below average QB play

Seriously doubt they can afford Teddy, MT, and AK.

Then you gotta pay those young def studs as well.
