re: Michael Lombardi (NFLN) isn't sold on Mark Ingram

Payton thinks several games ahead. He's going to keep giving the ball to Ingram when he's in there, let him continue to get a feel for NFL speed, and then he's going to burn someone with play action.

kind of like when Urlacher (I believe it was him) pushed Kruetz backwards 3 yards into Ingram? Dude has no chance with blocking like that.
RB's like Ingram are game builders. They are the ones that have to get some runs under their belt in a game in order to catch a feel and get going. This is the main problem with Pa(e)yton's use of them is that he rotates them in and out too much, thus not giving anyone of them to get a rythm going. Right now I believe we should be using PT as our main guy, because he has the experience to go with the talent. As the season progresses, you will see Ingram develop into a great RB. He runs with tremendous power (Lombardi is flat out wrong here), as evidenced by his forearming a DB back 5 yards as well as the great run he had when he fumbled. Dude was plowing people.
Now of course, as with any player out of college, there is always the chance of him being a bust. But come on now, 2 games of good, not great, play is not enough to judge him on.

bingo...i feel like a runningback like ingram will wear a team down and break some big ones down the stretch to either close out games or win close games...his style is very physical
payton needs to stick with one back for most of the game like he did in the beginning of 09.
bell for detroit
bell for philly
pierre for buffalo
pierre for nyj
bell for nyg
bell for mia
pierre for atlanta
no one for carolina
no one for st louis
bell for tb
etc...at that juncture payton just said frick it and drew went out and won games, which is why they tended to get closer towards the end of the season minus the new england blowout...and eventually we lost 2 games
stick with one back for the game and use sproles as a change of pace/pass catching back
the saints are unbeatable when the running game is working which can't be said for too many teams...UNBEATABLE

Lombardi is pretty solid analyst.

He is normally a solid analyst, but methinks he's rushing to judge a little quickly on this one.

Look we brought him in to pound the ball and pick up 3rd and 1. Not working yet. I agree give him time but Lombardi is correct, not sold yet. But it is early

He pretty much played Pierre in the first half and Bell in the 2nd in '09.

Did we?
Pretty sure they brought him in to be what he is, an all-purpose back that has a lot of power, agility, and speed. Besides, picking up 3rd and 1 is typically done by the lineman more than the RB. The line HAS to get some sort of push.

Name a RB that can get hit in the back field by 2 defenders and make more than 2 yards.
Also, Ingram needs a ton of carries to start going. The more carries the harder he runs. He wears the defense down.

Bell disappeared from the rotation after week 7 and had one more game with alot of carries (week 11 against Tampa bay)

Payton is not using him right, imo. Almost all predictable running situations.
When Ingram finally gets his chance, everyone and their brother knows we are rushing.

Hell, if the line does it's job, just about anyone holding the ball can get 1 yard.

Seriously, what has Ingram done so far to prove himself to anyone? He's waaaaay too green at this point. Pierre is still the better RB on the team
Posted on 9/19/11 at 5:25 pm to LSUFreek
Partly why is because he isn't a complete back yet. I'm sure Payton doesn't feel comfortable throwing him the ball or letting him sit in pass protect situations yet. When that happens, his packages will be a lot less predictable.
I don't see anyone can question Ingram's power based on what we've seen so far. He can straight plow over defenders. If he is basing this off a couple short yardage situations, then he needs to watch the games again. Ingram had no chance on those situations to show any power when lineman are getting pushed 5 yards into the backfield.

The kid has played 2 NFL games as a backup to Pierre Thomas. I mean...SERIOUSLY?
Who cares what an analyst on a tv show says? Ingram is way too young to be saying you're not sold on him. He hasn't even gotten enough carries to get a sample on.
I would bet money, if Ingram would have gotten the touchdown in GB, he would be saying Ingram is the real deal. It was one yard where every defensive player knew exactly where it was going.
