Are you idiots going to do this after every game? You feel smart telling people "I told you so!"? Well you didn't tell anybody jack shite. I haven't seen one poster on here since training camp say Meachem is the next Jerry Rice, all that anyone has said is that you can't reasonably declare a player a bust in their first year. And you can't. Will Meachem be a bust? Considering he's a WR chosen in the first round it's statisically likely, but it is still too early to make that declaration. If he isn't sniffing the field in year 2 the case against him will be that much stronger, but even then the typical rule of thumb is you have to wait 3 years before you can say "yeah this guy will never justify being a first rounder".

That was actually him playing in Devery Henderson's jersey because Devery would have bobbled the ball that would have lead to an interception.

Then again, if it were Meachem his surgically repaired knee (twice! - at age 21! And we still drafted him in the first round!!!!) would have buckled at about the 10 yard line and the pass would have been picked off by Atlanta.

Met an insider this weekend and got the scoop. He is NOT good. They are quietly hoping he gets it next year, but are expecting the worst (bust). Oh well, every team has had one.

Thanks spelling police...If I had ever seen him on the field I'd probably know how to spell his name.

Have heard the same thing but previous poster is right. With the money spent on him need to wait and hope he gets it at some point. If Henderson had been a fifth round choice instead of second he probably would have been cut first year. Oops, maybe that is not a good argument.

How long did we wait on Jonathan Sullivan, three years?

Anybody remember whether he got to be a first rounder, Meacham, from performance at Tenn or at workouts and combines? I don't remember him being that special at Tenn. but I may be mistaken

he had a breakout junior year

...also Devery pretty much had a redshirt rookie season so IMO Meachem gets a pass for this season

Not touching the field in the first year not being a QB? Bust!!! He was a bust from the moment he was drafted and they should have taken Greg Olsen (Brees would be doing considerably better throwing to his receivers with a safety valve like Olsen) or one of the quality CB's. There is absolutely no justification right now for choosing Meachem and now his "rookie" will be next year when we could have chosen a rookie receiver next year who likely would have been better for the value! No more hiding from the fact that that was a bogus pick....Sean Peyton took a step back in evaluation of talent with that one.

Robert Meachem had a really good year his last year at Tennessee. He destroyed LSU when we played them.
I didnt mind the pick at the time because I didnt think no defensive player was going to help the saints defense get better. I believed in the if you cant stop them try to outscore them approach.
I did think it was weird though that a player with his size, speed, catching ability, and production would drop to that late in the first round. Maybe some other teams saw some red flags that the saints didnt know about.

and production

From one year in college. If we're talking about people can produce for one year then go to the pros Abram Booty should have gone pro after his Freshman season. This guy was so overrated it wasn't even funny. When the pick came I was telling myself "Not Meachem, Not Meachem, Not Meachem..." And of course Meachem's name was said and I just hung my head.

The fact of the matter is they needed a WR and the pick was NOT a stretch if you went by NUMEROUS rankings and projections. He simply is not as good as expected. It happens.

The draft is hit and miss. Last year they had some hits, this year, not so much. It's not like Chris Houston is a difference maker.
