Mark Maske is an NFL Reporter for The Washington Post

His tweet:

quote:

The Panthers are no longer an option for Sean Payton. And there was an issue with Payton's interview with the Broncos. Payton likes the idea of coaching Russell Wilson and having that defense but fears a potential power struggle with a member of the ownership group, source says.

Edit:

From Payton’s twitter

quote:

Zero truth to this. We had a great visit and @Broncos Ownership was fantastic!!

Payton thinks he walks on water, is arrogant and dictating demands on billionaires.

Why? I don’t necessarily want the 49ers pick. He can still end up in Arizona or somewhere next year. CSP not coaching in ‘23 doesn’t really move the needle on how bad a coach we already have.

It's not about the coach we already have. It is about trying to maximize the really only valuable asset this team has.

If he wanted to avoid a power struggle he should have stayed here where he was able to tell everyone what to do, including the owners.

Didn't the scrapped 2nd interview with broncos coincide with scheduling cardinals' interview? Hopefully so, and Sean just pivoted to Arizona

It reflects on the Louisiana education system that people don't understand this.

In other words, they already have a GM and they didn't want to get rid of the GM and let Payton bring in his own guy. So either he told them no thanks or, more likely, they decided he isn't worth the cost in money and future draft picks.

Gonna be hilarious when this arrogant frick doesn't coach next year. Spare me the "valuable asset" crap. Without a quarterback, the 2023 season is gonna be a shitshow with or without those picks. Not likely you're going to see a massive offensive turnaround even with a top rookie QB when you have Dennis Allen in charge and Pete Carmichael running the offense.

Payton had the perfect coaching setup here with ownership and the front office with all the power he could want But he also knew he'd be exposed the longer he stayed without having a quarterback. And his attempts to draft and mold a new quarterback (Grayson, Book), or turn a diamond in the rough into a reliable hill (Taysom Hill) or resurrect a veteran QB (Winston) all failed.

He lucked into Brees when Miami failed his physical, and road Brees' coattails for 15 years. And if his complaint that ownership doesn't have enough juice is true, well, that's his fault for the bounties and all the years he thumbed his nose at the league. Let his arrogant arse sit some more.

So you think that a team drafts a young QB for one year of play? Not sure you understand that the "valuable asset" potentially helps the team in the long run. So many are butthurt over Allen that they do not look at the long term value of getting a young QB if possible.

She doesn't, she's part of the "ownership group", which is how a lot of teams are doing it these days. The Waltons are the primary owners. Her monetary inclusion is probably minimal, they bring her in as a name.

Its like if a group wanted to buy the Saints, they bring in the Mannings or something as front people, but there are much bigger money people involved

Payton doesn't need to coach. he's set for life. he can literally make demands and if they aren't met he just goes the Bill Cower route. he holds all the power.
