I might be reading this wrong but overthecap says we save 4.6m in 2018 if we cut him before June 1st 2018. Also, his salary next year goes to 4m up from 3m.

I know I am stirring shite up just this is a possible scenario if MI under performs, AP over performs and AK is a more complete back than anticipated.

What, he barely makes top 10 for all time Saints RB. The guy had one "nice" year out of 6 for the Saints. 4 of his years he was bad, 1 decent year, and last year which is what an average starting NFL should produce. Again 4 years that he sucked, 1 year where he was "not so bad", and then last year where he peaked and was an "average" RB.

AD will be 33 next year so I don't how keen they'll be on resigning him unless he stays completely healthy and blows up this year.

AD is just a placeholder with a 2 year contract.

If he still even performs above average in a timeshare (i.e. 4.5+YPC and 700/300), you'd still have to keep him for that last year. He'd only be 28 going into 2018 with maybe 1400 total touches in his career.

Peterson's contract ends after the 2018 season and if he does continue to play well, he's going to be 34 going into 2019 with maybe 3000 total touches at that point (currently at 2659; ~170 touches a year, hightower is worse and had 263 the last 2)

2018 Projected cap is 178mil, we're sitting at 149mil.
Free Agents:
Breaux
Vaccaro
Coleman
Fuller
Kelemete
Snead
Okafor
Moore
Bush
Brees

Cuttable:
Fleener 8mil cap (4.8mil dead, 3.2mil savings; june 1st: 1.6mil dead, 6.4mil savings) - underperforms
Fairley 7mil cap (6mil dead, 1mil savings; june 1st: 2 mil dead, 5 mil savings) - can't play medically
Strief 5.1mil cap (1.0mil dead, 4.1mil savings) - old and maybe retirement
Morstead 4.85mil cap (700k dead, 4.15mil savings) - Chad will love this, he's a freaking PUNTER
Ginn 4.5mil cap (2mil dead, 2.5mil savings) - maybe he drops too many passes and fuller is better?
Hill 2.833mil cap (833k dead, 2.0mil savings) - injury concerns
Te'o 2.8mil cap (300k dead, 2.5mil savings) - underwhelming
Anthony 2.46mil cap (970k dead, 1.49mil savings) - underwhelming

Warford and Unger both have roster bonuses that can be converted/spread.

Both are free agents after 2018:
Ingram 6.245mil cap (1.645mil dead, 4.6mil savings)
Peterson 4.75mil cap (1.25mil dead, 3.5mil savings)

But who are you going to keep long term if both play well/similar, the young guy more than likely.

Just posing a scenrio I think might play out but albeit not as likely but I think it's possible. And the variables of this happening may not be just performance related.

BTW, great post!

The ignorance on this board about Ingram is astounding. Payton can't commit to the run game if his life depended on it. That's no fault of any back.

Well if you want to go to stats, here are his stats. These are his yearly rushing totals:
474, 602, 386, 964, 769. 1043 with a total of 36 TD; so an average of 6 TD's per year (rushing and receiving) for a starting RB. But keep on believing he is a top 10 running back.

He averages 675 rushing years per year and 6 TD's. Very below average stats for a starting RB?

I love wasting time to argue. You kind of need carries to get more yards.

Deuce was lead back in 06; 1057 yards, 4.3 YPC; missed 1 game

Bush was lead back in 07; 581 yards, short 419, 3.7 YPC; missed 4 games; would still miss if he played all 16.

Thomas was lead back in 08; 625 yards, short 375, 4.8 YPC, missed 1 game; would still miss if he played all 16.

Thomas was lead back in 09; 793 yards, short 207, 5.3 YPC, missed 3 games; would still miss if he played all 16.

Ivory was he lead back in 10, 716 yards, short 284, 5.2 YPC, missed 4 games; would still miss if he played all 16.

Thomas was lead back in 11; 562 yards, short 438, 5.1 YPC, missed 0 games

Thomas was lead back in 12; 473 yards, short 527, 4.5 YPC, missed 1 game; would still miss if he played all 16.

Thomas was lead back in 13; 539 yards, short 461, 3.7 YPC, missed 0 games

Ingram was lead back in 14; 964 yards, short 36 4.3 YPC; missed 3 games; would hit 1k if he played all 16.

Ingram was lead back in 15; 769 yards, short 231, 4.6 YPC; missed 4 games; would hit 1k if he played all 16.

Ingram as lead back in 16; 1043 yards, 5.1 YPC, missed 0 games.

So In 11 years:
3 RBs have carried it for 200+ times
Most being Deuce with 244 then Ingram with 226 and 205.

Deuce had 4.3 YPC in 2006
Ingram had 4.3 YPC in 2014
Ingram had 5.1 YPC in 2016

well damn, know the fun part? Give Ingram 244 carries in 2014 and he also hits 1k! He'd been 2/6 in a CSP led offense.

Well, you kinda get more carries when you able to beat out other Running Backs. He couldn't beat out Pierre Thomas. Pierre Thomas was a below average NFL running back.

It also goes to show you how the league is now pass happy that we only have 11 1,000 yard rushers last year. I mean how hard can it be to get 1000 yards in 16 games? That's 62 yards a game. You need the touches though.

And now that he's getting carries...?

I mean a lot of the guys you listed aren't 1000 yard backs too and are force fed carries.

Ingram had more carries then Thomas in 2011 and 2012 he just didn't have more yards.

Left that there for you, but by that argument Bell also had more carries in 2009 than PT. Was Bell a lead back because he had more carries?

The only dilemma in using snap count is when they force Sproles/Bush onto the field as a receiver in an empty backfield set. They're a receiver, but they're still a RB in terms of "snaps". Then 2012 is actually Sproles.

Hard to find the snap count from <2012, but even based off of touches alone:
Ingram: 133
PT: 160
and its easy to already say PT had more snaps purely because he was the go-to pass protector.

2012:
444 snaps - Sproles
384 snaps - PT
266 snaps - Ingram

2013:
564 snaps - PT
357 snaps - Sproles
169 snaps - Ingram

ETA someone had a rough estimate
420 snaps - PT
540 snaps - Sproles
200 snaps - Ingram

Mark always runs harder when someone's after his job. He will be a beast this season. I love his positive attitude and I'll support him every step of the way. He has great vision and the will to win. He just needs the touches to get the numbers, and it's tough to do that in Sean's offense. I hope he proves all the naysayers wrong this season. The guy wants the endzone every time he gets the ball and I wanna see him succeed. It's going to be an awesome season to be a Saints Fan!
