That's because you are easily replaceable. It's not that easy to replace him with a safety who has the same high ceiling.

There’s plenty of safetys that know how to defend that play.

It wouldn’t be nearly so bad if he wouldn’t have ducked his head and dove. His whole responsibility was to keep everything in front of him.
He saw the ball and closed...

I'm pretty sure the defensive scheme was to play "sorta" tight over the top to tackle the WR inbounds on a catch. So he didn't hang back further, where he would usually play.

As I said, he saw the ball and closed. Then he realized he had zero angle, and if he finished the play, he would go through the WR. Pass interference in FG range, clock stopped on the penalty. Saints lose.
So he peeled off, and in doing so he hit the trailing cornerback.

That was going to suck any way it went down; I think the WR makes the catch and gets out of bounds if Williams plays safe. People would scream "he has to get up there".

If he drills the WR in the back before the ball arrives, they get the penalty and line up for the kick. People would scream "he has to play smarter".

It was all his fault

Was it his fault the Saints didn't pick up the third-and-1 before the field goal that gave them the lead with 21 seconds to go? If they pick up third-and-1, they can run that down after forcing the Vikings to use their last timeout and still the field goal to win the game at 0:00.

Was it Williams' fault the officials gave the Vikings three free pick plays in the first half and at least one bullshi-t pass interference call in the end zone in the first half?

Ask yourself these questions before pinning this loss solely on him.

Because I’m not Mickey Loomis or Tom Benson?

He had one routine tackle to make man. Blaming this game on anyone but 43 is a fricking joke and you know it.

sure, it's really easy to get a safety with a ceiling like his. That's why the Saints have a history of great safety after great safety.

Da fuq?

Diggs was 5 yards in the air and had to land awkward as frick.

Just meet him as he lands.

Some of you act like you haven't seen a common tackle before. Good god. He was fine in arriving he just fricking made a bone head decision to dive instead of tackle him as he landed.

Don't over analyze it.

All you worthless haters need to wake up and realize it is a game, the kid is a rookie and made a rookie mistake. For a rookie, he has been solid all year. This kid poured his heart and soul into this team. He will lock up that position for the next few yrs.

Because when they needed him the most he failed? This isn’t hard to comprehend. There’s no excuse for a professional to make that type of play on the ball given the situation. None.

Ok

I hate that we lost. I hate that we lost the way we did on that play. I hate that we lost like that to Tampa to end the regular season, and I hate that my college team and alma mater, LSU, lost in similar fashion on the last play in their bowl game.
I thought my son was going to kick a hole in the wall on that play. He's devastated, as we all are. We might not watch the Superbowl in my house, football might be done for the season for us.

But Williams was the second best player in the secondary this year, he made a big interception earlier in the game to get the Saints right back into it. He's a fricking rookie. I'm taking a deep breath, accepting that shite Happens, and choosing to remember this team made a great run to get into the playoffs, and then showed tremendous heart to come back in the 2nd half.
It was a great season and I'm proud of the team.

'cept the last play.

Nobody wanted to make the play more or is more devastated about fricking up than Williams.

No need to try to tear the young man down.

As a pro athlete he plays to be a well paid. hero or a goat. The goat won tonight. I am sure he is depressed, and so are all of us. The reality is that this was the worst play in over 50 years of the Saints. His reputation will Be always tied to this diasterous play. I am not hating on him. It unfortunate that this tatoo is permanent.

don't kick him while he's down? frick that noise

don't care if he's a rookie or a "nice guy" or "had a solid year" or whatever. he single handily made the dumbest decision arguably in Saints history and cost them a playoff game. not a game, a playoff game that was in their hands.

hopefully he never steps foot on the field in a Saints uniform again. trade his arse.
