No idea how legit this is. Owner has come out and said it’s false.

But....that is an extremely tempting option if Brees does retire. This team could easily stay win now mode and these cap numbers are practically a bargain.

If team did trade for Matthew Stafford... would have under contract for next 3 Yrs @ $57.8M Total (Huge Bargain). $14.8M Cash & Cap in 2020 $20M Cash & Cap in 2021 $23M Cash & Cap in 2022 Only comparable FA QB is Dak Prescott. And I'd argue Stafford is the better player.

I think they're likely just trying to drive up the price for the #3 pick by making it seem like they want Tua. They have so much dead money invested in Stafford. I doubt they deal him.

Sounds great talent wise, but wouldn't even those numbers be prohibitive for us next year with Brees dead money?

Send them Taysom and a 4th

But wouldn't be surprised if the Raiders try for him. Gruden wants to make a splash in Vegas

Brees retires, Trade to the Lions our 24th oick in first round for Stafford, and Detroits 2nd round pick plus 5th or 7th in 2020 draft..

The Rimor on NFL channel of Sirius this morning is Staffird will be traded and the Lions are going to sign Brady in FA. Pipe Dream..

No chance they dump him with that much cap space hit.

If Brees were retiring I would absolutely love for them to go after Stafford. He has a few miles left at 32 and could be prolific in this offense. There's certainly a dropoff from Brees but I think Stafford could keep us in the hunt for a few more years.

People that make these splash articles without doing homework really put a damper on anything exciting during the offseason.
This is one of those scenarios that it would actually be cheaper to keep her. If they trade Stafford, they would have a $32M cap hit, and keeping him on the bench would cost them $21M. So, if they are going to go with the young QB route, wouldn't it make sense to keep Stafford as a back-up plan. Then you also have the vet that the rookie can learn behind; even if it's just indirectly by seeing how Stafford prepares, breaks down film, and studies.

I've always thought Stafford would be a seamless transition from Brees

IMO, this has Patriots written all over it. Knowing Bill, they will trade a second rounder for him and win a Superbowl with him.

The Pats will definitely rip off a team or two to make themselves a lot better, it will happen. Would be interesting to see if they really do have to replace Brady though...

I remember when I was the only one in the Stafford extension thread in 2017 on the MSB talking about how terrible that was for the team and they should have instead traded him during that offseason.

My whole point was you'll never win anything with Stafford, and you're just setting your franchise reboot back by 5 seasons giving him that extension.

3 seasons later, and here we are...

We do have a better team around what Stafford had, but we ain't winning anything with him if Brees couldn't win it these past 2 seasons.

Hard pass for me.

If I'm DET, Tua isn't getting past 3 spot. Either we're drafting him or a team is giving up a farm for the spot. I'd like to then trade Stafford for serious compensation and then maybe get a Dalton to start for a year till Tua's ready.
