With Smith being suspended it wouldn't surprise me to see Tez line up at DE some this year.

I can definitely see Spags using him like Kiwanuka.

Vilma/Lofton- how will that work with both of them on the field together?

I'm guessing Vilma will get some sort of suspension. That being said, I think Vilma needs as much "rest" even when he is playing. I'd like to see Lofton start and get about 70% of the reps at MLB and let Vilma play 30% and try to keep him healthy.

Comeone Chamberlain and Wilson!!!

I think that you are on to something but I think it will be dictated by the run/pass situation. Hopefully Vilma plays more due to us being up by 21+ points all season.

thinking about this is kinda cool

remember when our DBs seemed to be the weakest spot on the team forever? Now it is pretty solid with the depth to boot. Maybe not studly top to bottom but dependable guys.

I'm thinking we are gonna turn the corner with LBs in the same way. Suddenly we're not talking who can we find to play but which one is the best at the LB spots.

I thought Lofton was a coup. Forget the 2 down talk. He has been a league leader in % of snaps played the past few years. Bonus benefit of subtracting his production from the birds too. Think he'll wanna show them they were wrong in letting him go?

Wasn't all up on what kinda player Hawthorne is but the more i read the more I like. Finding him on quite a few best free agent signings or under the radar impact players lists.

I can extrapolate the rate of improvement I saw in Wilson to getting pretty damned excited.

One thing to consider is the possibility that in a Spags defense, he likes smaller defensive ends. Being that we are heavy on LBs, there might be one extra LB that might be moved to a DE role, at least partially. Especially guys that really aren't big enough to play SAM/MIKE, but aren't the best WILL on the team.

I've seen it done in college, not a common thing in the pros since technique is everything on the line.

I think that you described Martez Wilson perfectly. He has the size, speed, and strength to be a situational pass rusher.

Galette Smith Jordan Wilson.

That's a solid pass rushing line.

Those four would be our version of Spag's "nascar" package.

Yes, but we forget about him a lot. I'd rather have him than Shanle. He's at least a special teams guy.

well my thought was, depending on the length of Harpers suspension, we could shift Herring out to cover the Safety spot - he played it decently at Auburn, and then they shifted him to CB.

to me he is more suited for Safety - he may not be a huge step forward as a saftey over Harper, but he should be servicable for the length of the suspension - hell he isn;t near as bad as Kievesharn (sp?)

Um, Herring is 6'3 241 lbs. He would have to drop some serious weight. I think Quddus could fill in just fine.

hmmmm good point - I didnt realize he had put on that much mass......well my theory is shot to hell :P

I do agree - Quddus should be decent there as well.

Do we really have that much depth at CB? We have players, but they are questionable at best IMO.

I agree with this.

Absolutely. I didn't even think it would be possible to land him. Taking him away from the Falcons just made it that much sweeter!

Hawthorne and Wilson are the question marks in my mind.

I do have to say, I wish we could have kept Dunbar on the cheap, but we definently got better than we let go.

Really? I don't think we'll see either Casillas or Wilson with their hand in the dirt. Casillas will be lucky to make the roster with this depth. Wilson plays special teams so he has value. I wouldn't expect Wilson, Herring or Casillas to get much playing time if Hawthorne, Chamberlain, Lofton and Vilma stay healthy.

This. Everyone assumes that because Tez is fairly big and faster than any DEs we have, then he would fit at DE. There's more to getting at the QB than being big and fast.

And I'd be pissed if Vilma starts at MLB over Lofton. Lofton is much better at the position than he is now. Not only that, but Lofton is better in coverage, too. Plus the SAM comes off the field in nickel packages, and I don't want Lofton on the sidelines unless he needs a breather. I wish I could find video of it but I saw one play where a CB covering Percy Harvin screwed the pooch and Lofton recovered, and ended up being a few inches away from knocking the ball down about 40 yard down field. If Lofton can stick with Percy Harvin like that, I like his chances against TEs and RBs on passing downs.

Would like that.

I think Vilma appealing the ruling will depend on his health coming out of camp.

Tez can rush the QB no doubt but can he hold up in the run game play after play.

And dang if Casillas didn't look great, fast and smart before the season ender he had. He just hasn't seemed as fast since.

You better believe if Shanle gets a starting job this year...he definitely has some major BOOM he's holding over the Saints organization. That simple.

Shanle see's your boom and raises you a 'well... get some players who can sit me down'?

But I really really really believe that we have the talent to 'sit him down' this year.
