It appears this article picked a doctor that would err on the optimistic sides to give us fans some hope.

Or he just gave his unbiased opinion. Dr. Chao has no incentive to pander to Saints fans, what are you talking about?

#Saints coach Sean Payton tells reporters today that he does not plan to place QB Drew Brees on Injured Reserve, which sounds like good news. It indicates NO believes Brees can be back within 8 weeks. 6 weeks was the initial estimate.

Disclaimer: I have no sauces. But I'm a Saints fan, saw the injury, and saw the test the trainer was performing. Oh and I have experience in hand surgery.

is this the same thing as gamekeeper's thumb? looks like it, I had that sx years back, but part of bone came loose where the ligament attaches. took a while to even swing a golf club.

“The good news here is that the recovery is actually fairly reliable. The good news here is that surgery actually speeds up that recovery and timeline and makes it predictable. I fully expect Drew Brees to be back at about the six-week mark. I fully expect him to be back to where he was for the entire second half of the season.”

I hope he's right but to say "fully expect" is a stretch. There's no data that demonstrates, reliably and predictably, a 100% recovery at 6 weeks in this very narrow circumstance (40yo NFL QB). On the contrary, the data unequivocally shows decreased grip strength at the 6-8 week mark when compared to the contralateral extremity. Now, for most people this deficit is not of functional significance. Is it for a QB?

I see what you're saying. However, how many ordinary people who have this surgery have the therapeutic resources Drew will have? I'd say less than 1%. He will have the best modalities, PT, athletic trainers working with him almost around the clock

It can be done like this, but with the pressure he puts on his thumb throwing the ball, he'll need the extra reinforcement with bone-anchored InternalBrace.

The internal brace is less about "extra reinforcement" per say, and more about providing immediate stability to allow quicker rehab.

Understood. He will definitely be in the most ideal situation possible for him to recover. No doubt about that. But even that can only hasten your recovery by so much. At the end of the day, part of the decision for him to return to play will be predicated around a risk vs reward equation: hes a 40yd QB with a narrow, narrow window. Some say the risk to clearing him "too soon" is worth it given that statement.

The good thing is we are 7.5 weeks away from Atlanta.

Yea I would be very surprised if hes not back by then. HOWEVER, I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't quite look the same his first couple games. I expect them to really shorten the field that first game and not call on him to throw deep much.

Yep. Also called “skiers thumb”. Some people make a distinction between the 2, designating skiers thumb as an acute injury like Brees and gamekeepers thumb referring to injury as the result of chronic repetitive force. Either way, the UCL snaps.

Yeah, I know. You can rehab quicker because you have immediate stability...from the “extra reinforcement” provided by the InternalBrace
