This is one of the bigger remaining long term priorities is to resign Vaccaro. His 2017 5th year option is 5.6 million roughly. There's a pretty big difference in elite strong safety salaries. Reshad Jones with Dolphins just got paid 12 mill a year average and then next down is Tony Jefferson near 8.5 million then a bunch from 6-7.

I'm thinking the number will likely need be very close or maybe slightly more than the 8.5 number. So say we do a 4 yr extension around 8.75 putting close to 35 million, add his 1 year 5.6 million we have him by the balls so that's around a 5 year 40-41 million dollar extension. Whatever guaranteed and bla bla bla.

Two remaining notes: Malcom Jenkins is at 8.75 and Saints paid byrd few years ago about 9 mill a year.

I'm hoping Bell steps up and we don't resign him honestly.

I keep hearing about how good Vaccaro is, but he seems to always get hurt at the wrong time and creates no turnovers.

Well, now he's sure to resign. All we care about is signing and drafting players with awful injury records.

I know he would have missed more games at the end of 2013 if the injury happened sooner (which was a freak injury and not from being injury prone).

But he's only missed 4 games in 4 years. That's not injury prone when talking about the nfl. Not in the slightest.

Hell he's missed as many games from suspension as he has from injury.

The other thing I'll note is that many people here likely highly devalue him. If he hits the market he can easily get $9-10 mil per. Being able to cover the slot and play the box is pretty huge.

I'd let the season play out.

If Bell and Williams look really promising, I probably let him walk.

Sorry to hit on this again but I just got around to looking at his stats and in 3 and a half seasons worth of games he has:

325 tackles (235 solo)
6 sacks
4 forced and 2 recovered fumbles
5 ints for 104 yards
22 passes defensed

For someone who plays a ton of slot or around the line, those are pretty damn good stats.

Edit:
Changed a bit at the top because of his 4 games missed to injury and 4 missed to suspension. So it's really 3 and a half seasons worth of games, not 4.

They tried playing Bell in Vaccaro's role during his suspension. It didn't suit him. Vaccaro is much more physical.

Yeah Vaccaro isn't really a safety at all honestly. He's a hybrid NB/LB and that's the role he plays.

None of these safeties are going to replace him. And none of our LBs cover the slot anywhere near as well (Ellerbe would be closest but Vaccaro is still clearly better).

We need all 4 safeties.

Honestly I think Bush could start out at FS while Williams learns and rotates in unless he really flashes in preseason. Bell stays at SS and Vaccaro stays in the box/slot.

Exactly, and I've said that we really need two linebackers who don't leave the field (cover and defend against the run), while the rest come in situationally.

KV is not a lock to me at this point to pay out the big long term contract.

That penalty STILL pisses me off! That was a clean play. He tried to lead with the shoulder and was penalized because the receiver lowered his head.

Coming back to this again. Last year in only 11 games he had:

67 tackles (50 solo)
1 sack
2 forced fumbles and 1 recovered
2 ints for 30 yards
5 passes defensed

He was balling the frick out. Our defense changed when he got suspended and is part of the reason we couldn't complete the comeback.

If he can repeat last year, I'd like to take a look at him. If he's the old vaccaro let him walk
