Jameis' contract breakdown

Signing bonus: $14 million.
2. 2022 base salary: $1.2 million, fully guaranteed.
3. 2023 base salary: $12.8 million, $5.8 million of which is guaranteed for injury and signing and becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2023 league year.
So while it’s a two-year, $28 million deal, the Saints can get out of it after one year, for only $15.2 million — unless Winston is unable to pay a physical by next March.
The contract has three voidable years for cap purposes, allowing the $14 million signing bonus to be spread over five years.
Basically a 1 yr 15.2 mil deal unless he can't pass a physical by 3rd day of the new league yr.

So Loomis got an above average QB to sign for 15 million when the market has them going for 25 to 30 million right now. He also only committed to him for a year, so if he is terrible or we draft the future QB this draft, we can move off of him quick.

Loomis is the GOAT and Jameis has humbled himself the 3 years in a way that shows massive character growth from the shenanigans at FSU.

Am I missing something? If $5.8M is fully guaranteed in '23, if the Saints want to walk they would still need to pay that. Then add the $11.2M deferred bonus, it would cost them $17M to walk in '23

With $11.2M in dead cap if they cut him after one year.

This is a good move. This is the implementation of a long term strategy to eventually find your franchise QB while capitalizing on a financial decision to not overpay and get married to a qb you know is not the future.
It's going to be ugly until we find that QB. But, at least we should be getting healthier from a cap standpoint and hopefully stockpiling talent for when that QB arrives.

Winston is not an above average starting QB. But, you are right that paying below market for a starting QB is key.

They were 5-2 with him and he had a 14-3 TD/INT ratio (one of which was a hail mary)
Not to mention having to throw to one of the worst receiving corps in the league.
