Why would the Saints hope that Darren Sharper gets a lucrative contract elsewhere?

It appears Saints safety Darren Sharper will hit free agency without being precluded by the $6.5 million safety franchise tag. Last offseason, 35-year-old Denver safety Brian Dawkins signed a five-year contract with $5.8 million in guaranteed money and an average per year of $3.4 million. Just like Dawkins, most people believe the 34-year-old Sharper has remained a productive player as he approaches his mid-thirties -- although Bill Barnwell disagrees -- so it would be reasonable for him to expect at a Dawkins-like contract. Not to mention, teams may be willing to pay a premium for Sharper because signing one of the stars of the Super Bowl champions is sure to ignite the fan base.
If Sharper were to leave, one would expect the "Who Dat" nation to question the prudence of such a departure. However, keep in mind that the Saints, Vikings, Colts, and Jets are the most restricted teams in free agency by virtue of the Final Eight Plan. As part of the Final Eight Plan, the Saints cannot sign an unrestricted free agent until they lose an unrestricted free agent, and the first-year value of the acquired UFA by the Saints cannot exceed the first-year value of Sharper’s contract with his new team. The Saints could be hoping a team overpays for Sharper, which would allow the Saints a lucrative one-for-one UFA match at their disposal. The newly acquired UFA to replace Sharper does not have to be a safety. It could be a linebacker possibly to replace Scott Fujita or, if Malcolm Jenkins will replace Sharper at safety, it could be used on a cornerback such as Dunta Robinson or Leigh Bodden which could allow the Saints to have three strong cornerbacks in a pass happy league.

And after that, there is clarification of the RFA tender process and how it applies to first round picks, which has some relevance for us...

Very interesting article.

Basically, the saints would like to keep him, just for a certain amount. If he does sign that big contract, it helps out with saints signing a bigger FA.

interesting theory, but also risky. It'd have to be timed right

My question has been what are we gonna do with Malcolm Jenkins with Porter/Greer looking rock solid? This may be part of that plan. I think GW liked him for a rookie.

The only part i didn't agree on is another cornerback. In fact when it came out that Dunta Robinson was gonna be available I thought of a thread... How Good Is This? A premier Cb hits the market and we aren't having one iota of discussion about getting him. Being able to get a high impact FA DT, DE, or LB for longer term might serve the team better than Sharper back for one more year. Not saying get rid of Sharper the bum. Before you think the sky is falling though other options could possibly be better.

so lets sign peppers... We'll pay him a million first year and 25 the second year. How does guaranteed monies factor in?

And it was just one of several options that the author threw out there...

Though you exaggerate, this could be a loophole the NFL didnt think about.

If so, i've also read that Arizona could be releasing Rolle who could be a younger replacement for Sharper

Salaries can't jump more than 30% from one year to the next.

This isn't really anything new. I figure someone MAY give him $5m in year 1, you can sign Kampmann if you want, though you won't be able to frontload his contract at all. Best thing is, if he wants to play for a contender, we won't have much competition:
-Indy, Minnesota have 2 great DEs
-Dallas, NE, SD, NYJ run 3-4, which he doesn't want to play in.
-Philly is the biggest competition amongst teams that will have a legit run at the SB next season, but they're looking like they're going to get Peppers.

That would free us up to go DT/LB in the draft. I think Smith/DanWilliams/Ellis/Kampmann could potentially be a great DL.

It looks like the Cardinals will release free safety Antrel Rolle next week rather than pay him a $4 million roster bonus that's due. The club wants to re-sign Rolle, but Rolle also wants to see what he would bring on the open market. If Rolle gets an offer approaching Adrian Wilson's $8 million a year average, the Cardinals will face a tough decision. Do you pay Rolle the same as you do one of the NFL's best safeties?
He's good but i wouldnt pay him 8 mil

its not a terrible idea its sort of a win-win

either sharper realizes there isn't that huge of a market for him and we get him back for cheap, or someone overpays, we improve our D on the FA market, get even more draft flexibility, and see if last year's first rd pick can make the FS transition

I like Sharper but there's no way he's worth a long term deal at 6 million per.

Brees has to get an extension
Evans has to get paid
PT has to get paid

Sharper is at best our fourth most important concern in FA
