In your honest opinion, do you think the defense will be better this season?

The homer in me says yes. But is Dennis Allen really that good of a defensive coach? Our defense got a little better when he took over, but it was still bad.

We added Bell, Rankins, Fairley and Laurinitas. Anthony and Kikaha are a year older, wiser and stronger.

I want to believe this is the year we turn it around. But I just don't think Allen is the answer. And do we even have enough talent on D yet? Another good draft of defensive talent away? What say you?

yeah for real... I don't have high hopes or anything but I just don't see how they can have a repeat performance of last year.

if anything I hope that run defense is better. Nothing worse than watching teams rip off 5 yards per attempt.

Simply, yes, I do. Allen may not be "the answer" but I absolutely think they are better.

Our secondary should be a lot healthier. Byrd, Lewis, PJ Williams, and Swann all missed a good chunk of time. We should get pressure with interior DL for the first time since the Hand/Glover duo.

I have to think so. I think the key to the whole thing is Lewis staying healthy. Our best years were when we had two starting caliber corners. If Lewis goes down we're screwed.

The sad thing is we only need an average defense and we're easily playoff contenders.

I think they will be marginally better. More sound up front in tackling, slightly better pass rush, less bumbling in the secondary. Good enough for 22-25th in the league, yards and points wise.

Something I foresee helping them is that I have an inkling that the offense is going to really evolve and be A) better overall, scoring more efficiently and turning the ball over less, and; B) controlling the tempo more. Ingram has been really good for us the last two seasons but the slow degredation of our pass catching corps has made him less effective than he could be. The additions of Thomas and Fleener, plus the maturation of Cooks, Snead and Coleman should really bolster this a bit. I think the team will at least have more realistic options when it comes to passing the ball, especially situationally. Last year if we really needed a tough catch in traffic with sound coverage, the only place Brees could go was Watson. No longer. So as a result, Ingram is going to see lighter boxes and I think he'll have his best year yet.

So, the D will improve on it's own - just getting more fundamentally sound - and the offense will improve and help keep them off the field, plugging the bleeding we've had the last few years (volume-wise).

They'll rank about 20th or so in most defensive metrics

Starting corner play will determine a lot along with interior d line rush up middle forcing qbs outside along with corners holding up. The rest will sort itself out and Ellerbe can be great when on field

I don't think it's crazy to assume that they'll improve in that department, with Kikaha officially moving to just "edge" and Rankins+Fairley coming in on the interior.

I really like seeing Cam Jordan take Rankins under his wing, too. Hanging out with him outside of practice and stuff. The guy knows how important it is for him to come along, and he will be a great mentor for the kid.

We will undoubtedly see improvement barring major injuries.

If they learned at least one or two things from the last two years, yes.
