He had a pretty damn good year last year.

He would have to restructure/extend on a team friendly deal. I think if he shows out this year he'll keep going on a short deal like Malcolm Jenkins.

Yikes. I forgot how shitty his deal ended up being. We only save like $1.7M next year by cutting him.

That’s not correct. We’ll only be on the hook for $1mm with a post June 1 release next year.

Nah, I don't see it, if I were in his shoes, I'd play out the contract and retire. Dude is a super bowl champion, and has had a decent career, I don't know if it's hof worthy, but his career has been good. He's rich, so, just get on with life now, he'll probably get into coaching since he likes working with youngsters.

People forget he started poorly last year but finished playing very well. Now at his age he is playing year to year and I think he and the team know it. He seems to have his head screwed on right so I don't think he goes the Willie May's route.

I mean he was ok but for a defense that had issues creating turnovers he didn’t help much. Still a solid player but not what he was.

That’s fair, especially for someone who burst onto the scene in college as maybe the greatest turnover creator ever in CFB history. Certainly the greatest pound for pound.

But I heard something the other day about our lack of creating turnovers last year. It was historically bad. Like maybe worst season in Saints’ history bad. I wish I could remember what I was listening to.

Yeah lot of turnovers are honestly just a bounce of the ball but its also something that may have not been emphasized last year by our previous coordinator as well. I still think Mathieu is a great asset to this team though and hopefully he’ll be put in more positions to make plays this year.

Pretty sure Mathieu led the team in all turnovers with 3.

That’s definitely not great.

We have way too much pro-rated bonus to only have a $1MM impact overall

He has 3 void years with over $7M in bonuses that have to hit our cap at some point starting 2024. That goes over $10M including 2024.

Hard to get turnovers when you’re always playing from behind and the opponent is never really forced into making bad decisions. Hopefully with a better offense we ca put pressure on opposing teams this year to be in more throwing, down and distance/obvious pass rush situations that will create more havoc and chances for mistakes.

It was basically a 2 year 18 mil deal.

Then they restructured. So they could technically get out of it after this year for basically nothing.

The restructuring did push looks like about 11 or 12 mil into future years.
