Payton knew what was coming and he got outta dodge
--no plan for a successor for Brees. Lookit New England. shitshow aftrer Brady but they addressed it they have a good prospect in Mac Jones. hes not there yet but there is a future. Saints got Garrett Grayson and Ian Book
--dumb draft moves. the trade to obtain davenport, drafting your center of the future when you already have your center of the future on the roster, taking Andrus Peat, stephone anthony, turner, rankins
--cap hell. overspending on free agents, giving taysom that stupid contract etc etc
--failure to obtain an LT when he had to have known armstead would be on the way out.
you can see how all that got us here. Defense is good, not great--aging veterans like Cam and D Davis, dumb moves in the secondary and solid but not spectacular DTs. u have some good young guys like Werner and Adebo
Offense is offensive save for a few runs by tay tay and that guy who had his first carry for a TD the other day. oh and the 4th qtr of the falcons game.
this is where things are and why Payton left.

Taysom's contract was a slight overpay. He got basically was a qb2 would get plus a little extra.
They drafted penning to play left tackle. Got hurt. Unlucky.
Now if you want to bitch about something you could bitch about turner.
Why take another project type player when you could've taken a more refined player at that spot?
I still think he does some good things and isn't a total bust but the fact he can't stay healthy is a problem.

Payton had full control of all player personel moves since he signed his second contract. He was responsible for every bad draft pick and every free agent move. He has been looking for a way out of Nola for at least 5 yrs even before he signed his last contract and gave the interview about how much he loved New Orleans. Before he signed that he negotiated with 4 teams but none would give him full control like he had in Nola so he stayed. Last yr he finally got caught negotiating with the Dolphins when he was still employed here costing the Dolphins draft pics.

None of these moves mean a hill of beans if the NFL, Roger Goodell, and Rich McKay (Chairman of the Competition Committee and President and CEO of the Falcons) hadn't conspired and manipulated referee grading by placing 4 Southern California officials to screw the Saints and place their vital new market Rams in the Superbowl.

Saints can give Payton, Hill, and Thomas away to another team for draft picks.

As another pointed out, Payton was halfway out of the door for a few years. Also, in his mind Hill can be the successor. With that said, when he left he still had QB options via FA, trade & the draft.
Rankins & Anthony were so long ago there is no impact on this years team
As has been pointed out thousands of times, with the way Loomis works the cap there is no such thing as cap hell. Spend like there is no tomorrow, and eventually let someone else deal with it
Armstead was still under contract w Payton left, they could have worked out a deal if he wanted to stay
Those dumb secondary moves happened after Payton left and DA took over

Payton got caught up in the Tom Brady / Dolphins / Brian Flores scandal. The only reason he didn't get suspended by Goodell is because then the NFL would have had to suspend Brady too and they weren't going to do that so they came to an agreement with Payton to pay him money under the table and "retire".
Why was he looking out of NOLA in the first place? Money, not New Orleans crime, and the chance to coach Brady for a couple of years

I love reading this kind of stupid shite from primarily CFB fans that don't understand the NFL
EVERY NFL team has a list like this. EVERY team. If any team hit all of their draft picks they would be the best team in the league every season. Missing on some draft picks is literally a part of the business.
The Saints have been one of the better drafting teams in the league over the last 5-7 years. Yes a few of the drafts weren't great but most were. IDIOTIC take.

The only people who did not expect Payton to bail and the team to have to reinvent itself after Brees retirement, are the people who complain about missed draft picks.
It was pretty clear that Payton was basing his last hope to another Superbowl on Brees. Payton was making no plans for the team post Brees and that is why the team is where they are right now.
The Saints have one of the oldest teams in the league and that age is showing in the injuries.

Sheldon Rankins was a great player who had some injuries that ended his career early. Andrus Peat is not a horrible player! He has a horrible contract!
