Highly unlikely that we'll sign Bartell

From rotoworld:

quote:

The Saints view Friday free agent visitor Ronald Bartell as a cornerback, not a potential free safety.

Bartell dabbled at safety in 2006 and might move there later in his career, but he's proven best as a cornerback. He's seeking $40 million over five years.

Not a chance we give him that contract given our situation.

i don't either. i think most people attach us to anything cornerback related..

but we signed gay last offseason (jason david the previous) and drafted porter 2nd round.. we may draft one more corner or pickup one in free agency but i doubt we spend that kind of money on someone who's name i never really heard of..

like it or not Vilma may decide to go to Florida. In that case a chunk of change would be available to spend. Bartell + MLB Peterson + LB drafted isn't too bad. Bartell doesn't have as much name recognition but he is definitely a guy on the upswing and ready to be prime time. Hell, getting him and dropping Mckenzie would be very easy... add another $6mil to spend- you could contend for Michael Boley, Crowell, Derricks Ward or Brooks, etc etc

I'm a super big Vilma fan, wear his jersey, but if he is inclined to go I am sure the Bucs can outpay NOLA at this point.

We'll see. He turned down 6 mill/yr from the Rams, so the Saints must be planning on giving him at least that amount. This tells me that they are willing to pay up for the guy. Maybe not 8mill, but something.

With that said, I read earlier on Adam Scheffler's blog (I think that's where) that it's between us and Denver, and he said he believes we'll get him.

MckenZie has no leverage really. IMO it's a backup plan to losing vilma. Doubt they can do both. If they do will be interesting draft

He is in town., staying overnight. That tells me he will probably do a physical. If they can work out a contract, look for Mckenzie to be released.

Low key? The guy wants $8 million a year and turned down a $6 million a year contract offer from the Rams. I think it's a mistake giving him that, especially when we can use that money to give Jahri Evans a long term deal.

Okay would you want to play for the Rams? He is coming to the Saints for a little more money. We are replacing MM contract with Bartell's new contract. We will get younger and faster quick.

The Saints are not going to get this guy. Someone will overpay for him and it won't be us. Once a cornerback hits the open market and multiple teams want him the price goes through the roof. Don't get your hopes up too high because a letdown is coming.

If ya dunno how to deal with letdowns you can't have been a Saint fan for long. That's a prerequisite.

So hope on
