I think a lot of people forget that Brady looked more done than Brees the year before last. Seriously, Brees had a much better year than Brady. No one was really asking for him.

Not only that, but people act like it's a foregone conclusion that Brady would have won it.

There was a verbal agreement in place awaiting Brees decision. It was a done deal !

Payton would have absolutely pulled the trigger on that deal if Brees retired. It was simply impossible to afford to pay both QBs and would have been a disservice to Drew's legacy to force the issue.

I have no regrets to how it went down to be honest. Tom going to the Buccs was great for his legacy - he polished that turd into a bright diamond. If he was to jump in the Saints pond in Drew's wake then it could have been argued that it was the team culture/Payton that made the difference and Tom's had the benefit of playing for two historically great coaches.

Not that I am a Tom Brady fanboy or anything I just like the generationally great players of any sport to have opportunities to prove that they are simply the best. There are some (like Brady and Jordon) that have proven that in their era.

I’ll add to it.

What if the refs hadn’t screwed the Saints against the Rams and the Saints had gone to and won that Super Bowl? Would Brees have retired at that point, thus opening the door for Brady last year?
