I guess I feel with Payton we always had a chance to be in the game, but we were a great regular season team for the most part and a complete flop in the playoffs.

Been saying this for years and regularly get called all kinds of names on this board.

Thank you for laying it out in black and white.

I forgot about the fourth 7-9 season

Payton and McCarthy are the same coach. It’s funny to me the Cowboys are ready to dump McCarthy for Payton in the next year or two.

Absolutely! And the OP, in his post, mentions Vernon Davis next to the loss to SF. But he got that wrong. It was Vernon F#*%&ing Davis that did us in that day. And of course a very untimely fumble at the goal line by the good guys.

Really amazing how many of those playoffs required miracles and/or some other unheard-of event to knock us out.

You add in the prior 40 yrs of failure and the history of the Pels and its hard for one to not arrive at the conclusion that New Orleans is cursed

2014-2016 were rough. It was a big blurr for me. Payton is a choker, he underachieved. Losing twice to those shitty Minnesota teams was rough. Really lost to some terrible QBs. Alex Smith, Hasselbeck, Keenum, Goff, Cousins ooof. Some bad losses. What's funny is that all these bums ended up folding as soon as they got one up on the Saints.

2019 and 2020 I felt the offense was just not there and I couldn't get my hopes up.

Offense was god awful in the 2020 playoffs.

We were starting a QB thst couldn't throw the ball 20 yards down field.

Saints playoffs after Super Bowl can be summarized by a either a combination of bad defenses overall, inability to to stop opponent with game on the line, drew Brees critical turnovers, and horrid offensive line play.

That 2011-12 team that loss to San Fran was probably the best all around saints team and we can make a safe assumption that the saints were a super bowl team.

When Pierre Thomas got knocked out at the beginning was a sign of a long day, but that team fought to the end. They were out played and probably still should’ve won

Winning record in 8 out 12 seasons post 2009. That includes 2 years (2011 and 2018) that we had a very good chance to win the super bowl. Also let's not forget that we should have been super bowl champs in 2018 and got f'd over by the worst call/non-call in NFL history.

If our next coach comes close to Payton post 2009 than that would be amazing.

Is 9-8 in the playoffs a "Complete Flop"? Including a Super Bowl Win? I just have a different definition of Complete and Flop than you i guess. If in 2006 when we hired him someone would've have said he will be here 16 years and 15 seasons and we will win 7 Division Championships, Go to 3 NfC Championships and win 1, Win a Super Bowl, make the playoffs 9 times and be 9-8 in those seasons in the playoffs everyone's 2006 self would've thought we won the Coaching Lottery, which we did.

Would have played the Giants in the Dome NFC Championship game and they owned the Giants at the time.

I get some of you want to be optimistic about the future but this is just laughably sad and disrespectful to a coach who turned this doormat of a franchise into a respected team every year

That loss to the Rams I think was the difference in having to travel to San Fran.

We lost to the Rams after we beat the ever living hell out of the colts.

Also lost to the Bucs when Jimmy knee capped Sean.

The 49ers beat the Rams twice that year and also beat the Bucs.

The Packers lone loss was a non conference loss.

We have had better defenses since 2011. But that offense was the best we've ever had.

Saints would have breezed their way through SF and into the Super Bowl in 2011. The play that changed destiny for them was PT going out with a massive concussion at the goal line on the first drive.

Ironically, it was after that game that the whole bounty gate and "turn the head" fraud was leveled against the saints.
