Elite QBs dont just "come along". You have to hit the draft lottery. And in order to do that, you have to suck shite forever and get extremely lucky. Or, you can do what LA did 2 years ago. What Denver did back in 2015. What the Saints did back in 2006... I'll add that by this time next year, the price tag on a QB like Carr will be completely out of reach for a team like the Saints.

I'm not here to sell anyone on the idea that Carr is elite. I'm saying the division is wide open and his signing likely allows us to coast into the playoffs. That energy helps you a whole lot more than being a garbage small market team with a ton of cap space. I trust the FO to manage the team through the cap issues. Frankly, its beyond arrogant that posters like you assume there's no thoughtful process in place to make that work, and the team will just crater under a single player's contract.

Cool. So we get to the playoffs with an dogshit record and then probably lose the first round.

Hell of a season guys

Reminder that we were very close to a playoff berth last season without having to pay a questionable quarterback over $30 million a year.

We’re likely a playoff team with Dalton under center. Unless Carr is “the guy” and can get us deep into the playoffs by taking the team on his back….then it was a bad move.

The fact that your level of thought makes you believe that the above is my level of thought is a lot more telling than you know.

2023 - $35 mil
2024 - $35 mil
2025 - $30 mil.

Did I glance through the thread too fast, are you suggesting that these are his cap hits? His actual cap hits are set to be:
2023 - $7.2M
2024 - $35.7M
2025 - $45.7M
2026 - $55.7M
2027 - $5.7M

Opt out after 2025 that would set his cap hits as followed:
2023 - $7.2M
2024 - $35.7M
2025 - $45.7M
2026 - $11.4M dead money

If they decide to walk after 2024:
2023 - $7.2M
2024 - $35.7M
2025 - $17.1M in dead cap

Obviously, we all know Mickey will restructure his contract next year to spread that $30M, so those dead money figures will change.

Dalton would have likely had the same contract that we gave Winston($12-13mil). Cut Winston in June and it saves us $4-5 mil. Sign a different backup for $3-4 or try your luck with drafting Hooker.

There...that just saved us over $20 million this season.

If Dalton is going to sign for $12-13M and Carr's cap hit for 2023 is only $7.2M; you actually cost the team $5-6M in 2023. Now, you did just save a shite load of money in 2024 and 2025

I think he's a horrible signing personally. He's nothing but a dent on cap. Dalton is similar production at bargain bin prices. Carr has more upside obviously but you need a great offensive mind to get the most out of him and Carmichael is not that guy. I predict by the end of the season Saints will regret this deal and don't be surprised if we ain't in the playoffs either.

There's no reason for me to believe Carr will do anything for the Saints. Actually emulates many past moves the Saints made before Payton got here. Got a big QB signing somewhere and they end up always shitting the bed for the Saints. So many in the past. It's the Saints motto.

Overpaid for a mediocre player who with the perfect fit can be a solid QB. Problem is he doesn't have the support system in place at Saints and he's injury prone. Bad signing, imo. If this was a signing with Payton here he likely could've got production out of him similar to Gruden. He's past his athletic prime and has nowhere to go but down.

True but nobody can watch Carr and say this either. It's very possible he has hit an athletic wall and is nothing but nosediving from this point forward. I'm not sure how anyone can have confidence even if he has some grace left in him the coaching staff here can get it out of him.

We can agree that Carr on the Saints roster, we go at least 10-7, 11-6 and win the division.
This is far from guaranteed. Dennis Allen is still the HC.

I keep seeing people talking about this great defense we have and it was ranked like 28th last year. The offense should improve with Carr but the offensive line is still questionable. Carr doesn't suddenly bring us to the post season even though he's much better than what we've had.

Compared to what? Sticking with Dalton and hoping for a miracle? Drafting a late 1st QB and praying for a miracle? What other options were out there? There were none.

If Dalton plays the entire season, we likely are in the playoffs. His first few games were spent trying get to speed with the offense. We ended the season a game and a half out of first and that's WITH the Bucs having Brady.

Tell me how our division being down even more next year helps Carr but somehow has no effect on Dalton.

You quite literally just listed options.

Funny how praying for the miracle with Carr is somehow ok though.....

Top 5 in QB sacks as well.

gave up the 4th fewest TD passes (17)

BUT

30th in interceptions (7)

23rd in fumble recoveries (7)

that's what was lacking. The turnovers.

Other than that, another pretty good year for the D.
