Scathing from the Sporting News

While everyone in the NFL makes contractual missteps, the Saints situation seems more compromised by the lack of any long-term vision or planning. Many teams are very deliberate in their roster planning strategy. The Saints are arguably the most haphazard team in the NFL...

...The cycle just continues with the Saints every year. Most teams have one year like this when they decide to rebuild, but the Saints are looking at a three- or four-year hole because they just can’t help themselves.

The strategy hasn’t worked.

Drew's face looks like someone just told him how much Fleener makes.

A 3-4 year hole? But we'll have at least $40 mil in space next year so...

They "went all in" in 2012 free agency and continued to do so thinking one more piece is all they needed.

Denver did the same thing a couple years back, the difference is they had an elite pass rusher and continued to add DL talent while we kept adding secondary guys

Have you seen how this franchise handles free agency? And you somehow think they will be able to go out and snag 2-3 effective players?

The league now is tailor-made to be built in the draft, something this franchise is woefully ineffective as well.

We still manage to sign a major free agent almost every year. I think we are doing fine by pushing the limits of the salary cap. Our problem is these free agents keep on flopping and our drafts keep on sucking.

Well thats one way to look at getting out from under a lot of dead money. "We will just be stupid with it."

Sean and Mickey's infatuation with high profile secondary players -- both early round draft picks and high-priced free agents -- is just more evidence of their ridiculous obsession of trying to recreate the Seattle defense

The Saints greatest success came from turning relatively unknown players into pro-bowl offensive linemen.. The whole offensive show was based on getting top-level O-line play from players on rookie contracts.

If this was a major media market this would be magnified x 100. How Mickey and Sean have gotten away with this is amazing. For crying out loud, Tom Coughlin got run out of town after winning 2 superbowls.

I'm blaming Tom Benson now. He lets them get away with it.

If the Saints didn't have Brees they would be a bigger joke than the Browns.

Saints need to save the big money for players who have proven themselves playing for the Saints. Stop throwing big deals at FA's, bring in more affordable FA's and drafted guys.

The strategy hasn't worked only due to the fact individual risks that they went after hasn't panned out. That doesn't mean their cap methods is a failure. Its a bullshite naive thought process. The singular issue that happened with Junior Gallete is the sole cause of our salary issues being so extreme.

Did you hear them talking about how Chicago is the only team that has less of their own draftees than New Orleans on the game last night. And look where that has gotten NO and CHI.

No we won't unless we decide to push more salary to future years. We are about $20 million under the cap now with both Kruger and Fairley contributing another $3-$4 million in dead money against that number once their contracts automatically void. So, yeah, we can probably get to $40 million under the cap by penalizing future cap years (and likely more dead money).

2015 Dead Money:
Junior Galette- Had to, get over it, respectable decision by org. considering cap penalties
Jimmy Graham- traded for a 1st round pick and a starting Center desperately needed on a bad interior OL and extended
Ben Grubbs- Traded for this guy Tyler Davison who's working out well.
Curtis Lofton- Was a QB of our D that was much needed- got too old, typical veteran cap cut who was on decline.

I've already talked about this year. Galette is a 12.1 million hit and the cut of Keenan Lewis was injury related but also in turn was a great opportunity to free up cash in future years to rebuild faster. Its nice we were afforded opportunity to absorb hit this year. This is a typical short sighted OH LOOK AT THESE BIG NUMBERS type national article.

Anyway you look at it, this team won't compete realistically for a playoff spot for at least another two years. That's based off of Drew still being able to perform at the same level he's performing now.
