But that is how they structured the contract on purpose. Khai harley isn't an idiot.
I didn't say he's an idiot. It was an incredibly stupid decision initially (which was likely not his call) and we have to keep adding to the issue (by restructuring every year) because there's so much dead money involved we can't afford to cut him (and we can't afford his cap his, so we create a bigger problem down the road)

Dead money goes up and down every year. It's not a steady climb. Yet another strawman.

You are arguing for a system that guarantees increased dead money. "Kicking the can down the road" is, effectively, creating dead money (by converting salary to signing bonus and using void years to literally create dead money). It's just a matter of when it falls on your cap.
That initial savings is dead money down the line, effectively.
Void years create dead money, literally. That's their entire purpose.

Overpaying is only relative to the cap space.
It absolutely isn't. Overpay is in relation to others at the position and where we value the player within that position.
We don't overpay whether we have cap space or not.

The Saints actions directly reflect what SFP is talking about. How is that a straw man lol
Spending in the nfl is not an unconscious exercise. You want to believe it is, then you keep citing examples on why it’s not.
When someone uses “straw man” on TD, that is usually code for “I can’t explain myself”

The dead money doesn't affect the actual effective value of a contract on the back end. It is included in the formula from the start.
This is why even though MM has a per year average of $11 mil or whatever it was, his effective cap for us is $8.6 mil.
Meanwhile MW has the same per year and effective cap number.
We literally design contracts to have higher looking per year while usually having much lower effective value.
You can call it bad all you want, it is an extremely effective method that has worked for decades for us now, and only twice with unseen circumstances has it bit us, with JG and with Covid.

It's a strawman because he is claiming we lost player x because of the cap, when in fact we showed we can clear whatever we want to fit whoever we want with the Watson situation.
It is the literal definition if a strawman, linking one thing to another without proving actual cause, while evidence shows the clear opposite.

No it affects new contracts that will be signed when that "back end" occurs. That's the entire point

That difference is the final year's salary (7M) and roster bonus (0.5M), which he will almost assuredly never see.
MM's contract created 2.4M in dead cap space no matter what else we do (via using 2 void years). That money is going to take away future cap (it's just not clear when, b/c MM signed basically a 2-year deal and may get extended or restructured-extended after that). That dead cap space can rise to 3.6M if we outright cut him after year 2.
MM's contract is basically a 2/15 deal with cap impact as follows:
2022: 2.64
2023: 8.60
Guaranteed Dead Money: 2.4M
Remaining signing bonus proration: 1.2M
Now, 2023 can be restructured, which just adds more dead cap impact down the road (by converting a roster bonus into signing bonus).

All teams do this by adding big salaries late in deals that aren't likely to be met. I discussed this at length about MWs deal yesterday and how much better it was because it's straight up and doesn't use dead cap-creating void years or poison pills to force dead cap-creating restructuring.

a. That's not what a strawman is. A strawman is creating a response to a fake argument that a person didn't make. Fake argument = straw man (fake person)
b. Your argument and my argument require assumptions. We are just making very different assumptions. That is the crux of the issue. You believe that if we had tens of millions of extra cap room we wouldn't sign our own young FAs. I disagree with that assertion.

Deshaun Watson & the impact on the team is not comparable to any other player
The same way they would pay Drew Brees whatever it took but they wouldn’t do as such with way; Darren Sproles.
There are consequences that go out the window when dealing with a franchise QB. They can make up for shortcomings despite what they cost

Also, had we gotten Watson, we would have had to gut many more of our young talent and older veterans in a year or 2.
Yeah we could fit him in for 2022, but 2023 and beyond? We'd be in a pickle.

The fake argument is that we lost MW and CJ becasue of cap mismanagement.
I've shown time and again several ways and with real, applicable reasons why that isn't true.
So yeah. Whatever.

That's not a straw man. We are both making different assumptions and arguing which is more logical. Completely different than a strawman.

You have made arguments defending your assumptions. That's it.
Show me where they said they wouldn't have signed MW and/or CGJ if we had 40M in extra cap this year (and without the dead cap space doom moving forward) and then you'll have proven your argument. You can't, just as I can't show where the front office said they WOULD do what I assume they would, given the same hypothetical scenario.

Yours is a false assumption and there are a myriad of examples. We let Fujita and Porter go because both got more than we were willing, but absolutely were able, to pay, because we thought we had replacements for them.
We let MW and CJ go because of what they got/want, and got replacements for them.
There is no assuming. When we wanted Byrd we went out and made it work. When we wanted to resign Brees we made it work. Those guys were within the value of what we wanted to sign them for. Those other guys were not.
If you think we lost MW because of the cap, you are completely clueless.

I’m glad y’all are still taking that shinny hook I sent out. Brees could’ve given us a hometown discount for eating his shitty bar food and drinking his terribly curated national “craft beer” tap list.

Let me preface by saying that I loved the guy, think he’s the true GOAT, and don’t blame him for handling the kneeling situation.
When they asked him to come back for the Dolphins game, with this contract… he should have been here. He and the coaches knew how bad Book was going to be, and that game ended up costing us a playoff berth.
Was there anything we could have done contractually, to cut some of the dead money for him flat out refusing to play when under contract and the team in dire need?

I don’t disagree with you per se, but you act as if the Saints are the only team in the league who gets bitten by overloaded contracts, dead money, or creative restructuring. We’ve been maintaining a power franchise and drafting pretty well.
It is what it is.
It is what it is.

Cap was partially responsible but I agree they could have kept him if they wanted. They felt their defense was so strong that they could have found a much cheaper replacement without much drop off. Plus, the Saints don’t Re-Sign safeties.
