Drew Brees Contract

The gift that keeps on giving. $11.5 million of dead money. Thank him for losing Ceedy. Armstead also clocking in at over $12 million in dead money. 2 of the top 4 cap hits this year don’t play for us. Next year looks even worse for current player’s cap hits. Loomising causes some causalities but keeps us competitive. shite happens.

His cap hit this year is pretty epic in its own right and we would have faced most of that regardless because of the void year we added last year
We mismanaged the hell out of our cap because of Brees's final years. We are going to keep dealing with that for some time, too (see: Hill, Taysom)

We’re $54 million over for next year and we have Davenport and McCoy. Don’t have enough room for Ceedy.

You’re one of the biggest Drew haters I see on this board… You talking about the guy who took the Saints to the promise land when we used to be the aints?
I’ll be sure to thank him for that Super Bowl also!
PS: he’s Saints GOAT and there’s nothing you can do about it…

And they will do the same thing they do every year.
Backload contracts and add dummy years. This is their strategy which isn't going anywhere.

These guys are idiots Chalky. We were $100 million over to start this year and we got down enough to make space to make room for a Watson trade while ALSO resigning other players AND bringing in new guys.
We could have fit/kept ANYONE we wanted to, but they don't get that we have a value system for players and we refuse to overpay (except for Payton's pet projects), especially when it comes to defenders.
MW was never getting $14 mil per here (which is his actual effective cap given how the idiot Ravens structured it, unlike when we do contracts and the per year is never close to the effective contract amount), and CJ was never getting $12 mil per.
They were priced out of their value for us and were replaced with cheaper options. This year will tell if those options pan out, so it's pointless to argue if it was worth it or not yet.
Being $54 mil over is only half as much as this year. We'll get through it and keep the players we want for the value we think is right. If they want too much they can go elsewhere. We'll also add the free agents we want if the value is right for the player.

The problem is that, starting with mishandling Brees at the end of his career, we have started to inefficiently use our cap and the chickens are coming home to roost.
Just this year we have right at 35M in dead cap
To sign guys this year we added more dead cap for future years. We literally can't even sign guys today without having to kill future cap space (and this is dead cap space if we never restructure/cut them, when we all know they're going to be either restructured or cut, adding to that dead cap number).
This dead cap % is going to keep accelerating every year that we have to dig ourselves out of the hole (largely due to dealing with dead cap from previous restructuring). We are in a position where some guys can't even be cut and I'm not sure when we will be able to cut them (Hill is going to have a 13.9M cap hit next year with 23.7M in dead money. If we convert his 9.9M salary into bonus, it just means he has to stay longer and the "cut cost" increases further).
At this point Lattimore and Ram are going to have to extend themselves for max years just to deal with their annual base salary restructuring. Their dead cap amounts are like 39 and 43M this year and will increase after we convert them again next year).
Keeping Brees too long and going after Watson are straight fricking us long term.

This is how kicking the can works. It is intentional.
Loomis did an interview where he said this is all planned and you can literally do it indefinitely.
It doesn't affect anything we do. We were going after Watson for fricks sake. xD

But it's not that simple. Each time you do it, you add more weight onto the future.
That weight is already costing us young talent. It's going to get worse every year.

Again, yes, but each year you eat up more of your cap in dead space. And you end up with guys like Hill who are essentially dead cap space but on the roster who we have no means to get away from.
Our window to maneuver gets smaller every year that we do this plan.
Our dead cap + Hill is over 40M. That is not insignificant. It's going to get worse every year and cost us young talent. We already can't even sign guys without automatically adding dead cap space.

Also, the one way you can combat this problem is drafting well in volume
...
But we are trading future capital and making 2:1 and 3:1 trades and gutting our ability to refill the roster with cheap young talent to offset the cap mismanagement.

Just going to say wrong because he explained this and say it's basically infinite as long as the cap keeps working like it does.
The future cap is continuously kicked and you basically never get caught up.
As for costing us players, it hasn't. We could have kept MW for $14 mil. We cleared the cap to add more than that for Watson. We didn't want to pay him that. Same thing with CJ. We're not paying him what he wants.
And as for "bad" contracts, dead money doesn't equal a bad contract. A player being paid more than they are worth is a bad contract, like Taysom. But the money isn't costing us anything. Brees' money didn't cost us anything.
We made decisions based on value and will continue to do so. We will keep borrowing from future caps because it will never catch up until the way contracts are done changes or the cap goes down.
You whole argument is a strawman based on us letting 2 players go We didn't want to overpay.

You need some new material.

That window closes as dead money increases, which is what we're facing moving forward.

The problem with your argument is "overpay" is only relative to available cap, which is affected by the ever-increasing dead cap black hole.
If we had the $40M in dead cap + Hill hit this year in cap space, you think we let both MW and CGJ go?

Yes.
The saints have never been a team that overpays. They weren't just going to give cgj an extra 4 mil just cause they had more money.

But that is how they structured the contract on purpose. Khai harley isn't an idiot.
This is their strategy. While i don't always agree with it, the results speak for themselves.

Overpaying is only relative to the cap space.
If we had 40M in extra room, we could have literally put a huge chunk of that 70M on our 2022 cap, making 2023-2026 a bargain.
Is that "overpaying"?

Then why did we add 6.2M in dead cap to our 2 big FA signings? For the hell of it?
