With the crazy $$ WRs are getting, it would seem it’s smart to draft a top 1-2 round WR at least every few years or you’ll have to pay crazy $$ to veterans demanding near QB $. How much we are willing to pay Olave will be very interesting

Yes that’s what I think you almost have to do now. I’m not big on paying WR big money. It’s a position that you can always replace with better and better players coming out of the draft in the 7 on 7 era. Plus it seems every other big name WR is either a prima donna, headcase or a criminal. Very few guys like Justin Jefferson who earned the deal he got yesterday. I would much rather spend my money on OL/DL, QB and CB.

I don’t know if it is as much about the positions as it is about the players.

I think we will (and are starting) see top guys (stars) at each position get big money and the rest of the team signed to mid-level deals. Kind of like the NBA where you have teams signing one or two stars and try to fill the rest of the roster.

You’ll get 5-8 QBs making big money (Mahomes, Lamar, Burrow, Allen) 3-4 DL (Bosa, Garrett, Chris Jones, Wilkinson) 5-6 WRs (Jefferson, Chase, Lamb, AJ Brown, Aman Ra St. Brown) 4-5 DBs (Ward, Humphrey, Diggs, Lattimore) 2-3 LBers (Burns, Allen, Watt) and 4-5 OL (Sewell, Thomas, Tunsil, Taylor, Hunt) signed to big contracts and everyone else will be transient.

IMHO

While there is some truth in the strategy, the problem is WRs have some of the biggest bust rates of all positions. And it's not a small sample size either. So while you may be able to save on the big contracts with this strategy, you are also risky drafting a WR3 with your 1st round pick.

As another poster pointed out, there will be a few WRs out there that are worthy of a big contract, but along with that will be the mid-level WRs that get to ride their coat tails to similarly sized contracts. Plus, as with any position/player, there is always the risk that you give them the huge contract their earned, they have a great year, then get injured and their lack of production brings the cancerous ways to the forefront

Why do people keep acting like Olave is a stud?

Regardless, You don’t overpay on WRs no matter how good they are. Finding a franchise QB and paying him the big bucks is much more important and a much more worthy investment.

If I’m paying a WR big money they better be an absolute freak that a team has to completely game plan to stop.

hell, the cost to acquire him in the draft was steep so I'd like to think that the Saints wouldn't get too carried away when the time comes.

You never really can tell with the draft. Justin Jefferson was the 5th WR taken in the draft that year behind Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb and Jalen Reagor. And Brandon Aiyuk was only a few picks later.

And all those guys were picked after Chase Young, Jeff Okudah, CJ Henderson and Isaiah Simmons who are all on their second or third team.

WR is trending on being a moneyball position… teams nowadays are bypassing paying WR1 costs to try to achieve similar production in the aggregate.

And it doesn’t mean you have to take WRs early the draft either - there’s plenty of hits in the 2nd round and beyond. Obviously if your QB sucks why even bother taking a WR super early unless you have a QB succession plan in place?

This seems baseless. What exactly are you talking about?

I’d rather pay a QB and o & D lineman

For the millionth time, we are not Kansas City. Stop comparing our situation to theirs. Patrick Mahomes, who could possibly be the GOAT quarterback by the end of his career, will not be suiting up for the Saints any time soon.

Our team will need to be built differently than Kansas City’s until we have another Hall of Fame quarterback at the helm.
