Our current cap landscape is 31.7mil in cap space and assuming Brees signs a long-term deal we're looking at 20mil going into free agency. Not including cuts, restructures, and extensions.

That 3.2mil won't limit you. 3.2mil can be easily had.

What's more valuable:
Fleener @ 3.2mil in savings
or
Hooman @1.6mil in savings and Banjo @1.7mil in savings
or
Stupar @1.725mil in savings and Banjo @1.7mil in savings

Or hell, all 4 of them being cut.

I thought he had a decent season until the injury.
Really? He averaged 2 receptions and 26 yds per game. And he didn't score one TD after Week 2.

Outside of the Redskins game (where he balled his arse off in the 4th quarter) he sucked balls.

Agreed on keeping him for this year.

He's underwhelmed this past year, but I think 3.2mil in savings and 4.8mil in dead space doesn't justify losing a starting caliber TE. You gain more next year when its 5.8mil in savings and 3.2mil in dead cap and its like the situation with Kikaha, is there really a better option for the cost (3.2mil)?

Would rather cut Hooman (1.6mil saved, 334k dead), sign a free agent (Burton), and draft one in the 3rd round (Fumagalli, Schultz, Gesicki, or Goedert?). We usually only keep 3 TEs IIRC, but nothing wrong with 4 for a year. We also groom the drafted TE, considering most TEs take time to develop, even 1st rounders. By 2019 we can afford to cut Fleener, Hill is a free agent, and then either pick another one up VIA FA, re-sign Hill, or spend a late draft. If all goes well, our TE corp in 2019 is: Burton, 2nd year player from 2018 Draft, and Hill with the only loss being Fleener.

What's worrisome is if we go into FA with Hill being the only carryover from the previous year. Worst case scenario what happens when Hill is your best option...that's worrisome
There's real cash involved as well. You are talking about keeping him to save $1.6 million in "dead money" a year later. That would entail paying him $6.3 million this year to be on the team. Is he worth that?

I guess I’m just remembering how ineffectual the position became after he was out.
He was on pace for 500 yds. With all of the plays to Kamara and Ingram, I thought that would’ve been decent.
Enough to justify that contract? No, but enough to make me say I’d rather keep him than eat the money and cut him.
But maybe the Saints will say it’s time for him to go

You ask him to take a pay cut, which he probably will just cause he seems like that type of player.
The tight end market is not as good as everyone keeps saying.
Sefarian jenkins is staying in new york then u have trey burton which will cost alot.

I absolutely hate fleener and hated that we gave him 35 mil the minute it happened but right move is getting him to take 3mil cut and draft tight end

re: Do we cut Fleener today?
I don't care if we cut him but I'm not sure that Payton and Brees do not have too many toys.

The fact of the matter is that most weeks the Saints will run 65-68 offensive plays. We have seen the Brees pass attempts come down to between 35-38. So say 30 running plays a game. Divide those how you like.

Now just judging pre-snap reads. I would say that the Saints are good for at least 10-12 passes to the RBs--screens, swing passes or the middle dump off.

So Brees will have 23-28 passes to all of the other receivers.

So how often is Fleener actually targeted? I have said this about Snead also. That is the rarest of occasions Snead or in this case Fleener is the primary target.

Remember the Skins game---Brees hit Fleener like 3 straight times to move them down the field. On those three plays Brees knew the defense could not switch and he had the mismatch that he wanted.

That 3.2 mil coupled with a few other moves becomes $10+ mil. Like I said, it's a piece of the puzzle to free up more room. We sit at 14th in cap space heading into the offseason without Brees on the books yet. There are teams with major money to spend. We need all we can get and Fleener is not vital at all to this team's success.

Mark Andrews from Oklahoma would be All Pro in this offense. I’m hoping he falls to the 2nd or 3rd round, but I know that’s wishful thinking. He’s going to be an absolute stud.

i think in thaT particular game he didn't target Fleener until that drive you are talking about until late in the game.

Fleener had 22 catches in 11 games last year.
