It was a hire based on the fact that the FO wanted continuity from SP to the new HC, who was already on the staff. It was a lazy hire, I agree, but, there was a rationale behind it.

It’s obvious that when he’s not solely focused on his side of the football the whole team suffers. He knows nothing of offense and his attention gets taken away from the one thing he sort of knew.
