Defense in First Round

Every mock draft I've seen has Nakobe Dean going after our pick. My question is this: should we take an offensive player no matter what since we need a lot of help on that side or should we take the best player available even if that is defense. I think Dean is a top 10 player in this draft and would take him if available.

If we don't take a QB or try and move up to take one of the best QBs, Then the entire new coaching staff should be fired on the spot along with Mickey Loomis. The only way I see that pick changing from QB is if we sign one in free agency, and that can include Winston. QB is the absolute most important position to fill this offseason

I agree, but through the draft?
It’s a crap shoot.

Very good player but Demario Davis plays the exact same position. Unwise to spend 1st round pick on a position where you already have a top player in the league.

Completely disagree. The saints should not get themselves in the trap of chasing average QB's just because that is what the draft gives them. If a true franchise QB is not there then pass on wasting a pick. Way too many teams suffer in mediocrity and turmoil because they waste too many high picks chasing QB potential and then are obligated to stick with that player due to the investment made.

Free Agent QBs will take up a sizable amount of cap space. If you go with a Free Agent then they have to be good enough to overcome deficiencies in other areas (WR, RB, OL).
Rookie QBs are cheaper so you spend cap on other positions. To go rookie QB you need to already have, or be able to aquire, a high enough pick in the first round which you either have to be abysmal or have a lot of assets to give up.

I like Dean a lot and I think he ends up going before our pick IMO.
I’m not sure how much play he would get with Davis and Werner playing most of the time. And I’m not sure we could even use him as an edge rusher with Davenport and Turner (although they both miss a lot of time).
I wouldn’t hate it. But we’d have to trade up to get one of the WRs we pass on. That being said, if we got Dean & either Burks, Olave, Williams or Dotson, that’s an A+ draft and I’d be really excited.

No. We will let Dean go in 1st and grab Damone Clark in 2nd. We will get either an OT or WR in 1st. We will get a FA QB before the draft.
II heard on ESPN radio that Titans want to move Tannehill but no takers. I’d consider him. He might ball out in our system.
Other possible QB’s - Rodgers, Wilson, Garopollo, Watson, Wentz, Goff.

If we going defense I’m intrigued with Jordan Davis on this line. Guy is huge and athletic. Woukd be a crazy dline with him alongside Onyanata, Davenport and Cam.
But if one of the wide outs drops, esp Wilson, you may have to take them

Tbh.. this is a head scratcher.. The only qb that's worth a first that we'll be close to get is Matt corrall.. that's a big if..
So unless our new coach thinks trading players and multiple picks to get the qb they want it's really based on that.. but I'll stay away from defense the first 2 rounds.. depending on free agency and we don't have a ton of cap..
We still need wr number 2# a real burner.. we need a new left tackle.. so if we can get past qb,Lt,and wr#2 we should be in good hand to maybe snatch a guard and a tightens and we'll be back on top but it all starts with who will be the next head coach and wat qb we pusuit but frick defense at the top of the draft

What makes you think he’s a backup? He was really good considering he was a rookie. I like Dean, but he’s an unknown and may not be as good as Werner.
Davis is 33 years old. If anything, Dean is an eventual replacement for Davis in a year or two.

So QB isn't the most important addition needed on this team? I fail to see where that's a stupid take.

quote:This is why it's a stupid take. We should fire everyone if we don't draft a qb? It's pretty much a consensus among scouts that there isn't an elite qb in this class. Much better options in FA than the draft.

QB is the most important position on the team as we saw last season, if the new staff isn't on that page then I stand by my statement.
