Could P Blake Gillikin be more than a camp leg for the Saints?

Beyond that connection, Gillikin is a fine talent in his own right. He started four full seasons for the Nittany Lions, averaging 43.0 yards per punt in his collegiate career. As a senior, he pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line on 32 of 62 punts (51.6%). For perspective, Morstead had one of his most effective performances ever last year, dropping punts inside the 20 on 29 of 60 attempts (48.3%). The NFL’s most-efficient punter was Sam Koch, who forced the Baltimore Ravens’ opponents to start inside their own 20 on 21 of his 40 tries (52.5%).
Could Gillikin beat Morstead for a spot on the 53-man roster? The Saints have held vicious training camp battles at long snapper and kicker in recent years, but Morstead has weathered those storms for more than a decade. It’s almost impossible to imagine someone besides No. 6 handling punts for New Orleans.
Still, let’s look at it objectively: great as he’s been (and remains), Morstead turned 34 this year and carries a 2020 salary cap hit of $4.3 million, along with the NFL’s highest annual average salary among punters (north of $3.9 million). He’s under contract through 2023, but the Saints could release or trade him after June 1 and recoup $3.3 million. Those resources could be put to use retaining younger talents like Alvin Kamara, Marshon Lattimore, or Ryan Ramczyk.

Absolutely cannot see that

Anything is possible.
But he has to beat Thomas by a wide margin and have extraordinary consistency.
Saints aren't dying for cap space.

If you never had the chance to see this guy play you really missed something. Played for Bear Bryant at Kentucky and as a QB and placekicker played in the NFL for 26 years. Retired at close to 50. Ray Guy was 36 when he retired.

Morstead has earned his salary. He consistently pins opponents deep and never shanks a punt. A bad kicker can certainly impact games. We’ve been spoiled with morstead and lutz. I have not noticed any decline with morstead. Doubt he’s going anywhere unless gillikin is very very good

Blanda was a freak like Nolan Ryan.
Taysom knows I bet.

I cant remember the year but Morstead got hurt and we had Brandon Fields i think was his name. I remember him being an absolute trainwreck

We are considered Super Bowl contenders. We aren’t going to downgrade a huge piece of salary cap just to get younger and save money. We are in win-now mode.

He seems like a legit talent. We could hold on to him, show case his skills, then sell to a team that is in need of a punter

That won't happen gilikin is a talented guy. Will definitely get picked up on practice squad for sure

Yep. I think best case scenario is trading him for a 6th round pick. Probably more like a 7th though.
John Harbaugh does that with kickers. He probably realized that he should've gotten something for Lutz instead of just cutting him & then telling CSP about him. I'm glad Harbaugh did that though.

Contractually its possible but doesn't make a ton of sense this year. Only saves 1 mill outright cut, june 1st cut makes it a 3 mill savings though.
FG holding is the biggest issue with moving on at this point imo. The difference in punting capability of each is hardly worth discussing.

RE: George Blanda
I'm not sure how it relates to the board as Blanda was a placekicker and quarterback, but I did see him on TV with the Raiders a few times when I was a kid and always that the dude was a class act.

The FO doesn’t have sentimental attachment to players (other than DB9) like fans do.
Morestead will eventually be replaced. If this kid comes out and punts better than Morestead this summer, the job will be his.
Simple as that

it is about that time period in a punters career that money comes in to play to end a guys career with a team.
he has been great for us but we had punters before him and will have someone replace him at some point so as soon as someone can do as well as Morstead for less money then im sure they will move on.
teams have no loyalty to keep players who arent franchise tag worthy no matter the lip service they might give to the contrary

Only responsible for one of the greatest plays in franchise history.

If I'm trying to win a Super Bowl right now, I dont frick with my kicking game. If you change punters you also change holders for Lutz. I'm not messing with something that is already top-3 in the league.
