Contrast the ruling in Olave’s nonTD and the Pats one ruled a catch vs Latimore

I may not be remembering it right, been working and half watching, but wasn’t the Patriots one ruled a catch because Latimore dislodge the ball after his backside was on the ground?

And Olave had a few steps, where the Patriots catch did not have that element

Kinda makes sense but also kinda seems like possession all the way through would mean if it gets knocked out that’s not possession all the way through.

Also, why is it automatically a td if it touches the red pylon then and doesn’t matter what happens after? Cross the goal line; it’s a score is what they always preach

If Olave didn’t drop the damn ball every time he hit the ground it wouldn’t matter

I thought Olave caught the ball just outside of the endzone and crossed the line. Should’ve been a TD no matter what happened on the ground.

I think the biggest clear difference is the catch by the Patriot receiver was ruled a catch on the field and it stood. Olave's play was ruled no catch on the field. I personally thought both were not catches, but I can say with certainty that I have no clear idea of what a catch is in the NFL through years of inconsistent officiating.

That's if the player crossing the pylon has possession. Once you break the plane of the goal line WITH POSSESSION the play is over at that point. They said Olave never fully gained possession (rightly or wrongly) because he didn't hold the ball through going to the ground.

Olave had possession and made a football move with his two steps before he fell to the ground. He didn't fall to the ground in the process of making the catch which is typically when the catch is overturned.

It really is amazing that the NFL has made the definition of a catch so convoluted that nobody knows what a catch actually is anymore.

Which is the biggest problem with the entirety of the NFL officials. It's like they all read different rule books from week to week.
That on top of them all feeling like they need to be the center of attention and insert themselves into every single play. The amount of flags this year in every game seem higher than ever. Through week 5, minus tonite of course, there have been 963 penalties total. There were 3,154 in all of 2022.

Olave’s wasn’t a catch. He only took 2 steps and lost it when he hit the ground.
The ruling on the Patriot one was that the ball was secured with the player down and then the ball was jarred loose.
I don’t agree with that. The guy was out cold and the ball was just laying on him…not secure. But it’s a reasonable argument and different than the Olave catch.

I don’t think that’s true.
A player still has to complete the catch.
