Continuity and Culture

The whole premise for choosing DA was to continue with the winning culture that Payton established. It seems we did not have a culture outside of Payton and the continuity doesn't mean jack shite.

It was an asinine decision. Payton was a domineering head coach who controlled every aspect of his team. He wasn’t a delegator. To hire one of his lackeys thinking you’re getting someone who was, at least partially, in charge of steering the ship is a joke.

Continuity and culture has turned into complacency and predictability.

True. Payton also knew he had to mix things up from week to week. Sometimes it backfired (like when he got too cute throwing the ball way more than needed) and sometimes he got on a roll. But it kept the team from getting complacent and the Saints were a lot less predictable under Payton. In general opposition did not know what they were getting from week to week with Payton.

CSP and DA are really total opposites. Bottom line is DA was the easy, errrrrrrrrr lazy hire by the org. It is a hire that will set us back for quite a while unless we happen to catch lightning in a bottle down the road like we did in 2006.

I'm not sure the culture under Payton was always what we think it was. He had several 7-9 seasons. And he had a Hall of Fame QB. CSP record, 2012 not included since he was suspended for that year.

I do think DA was a bit of a lazy hire but I didn't hate it at the time. Now it looks like a mistake. I'll let the season play out before I make a final judgment. Not that my judgement has any impact.

The problem is when people think one magically absorbs the mindset and approach and abilities purely by being around another person.
It mostly fails because that simply is not how the second person works. They are trying to be someone they are not. Again, not a huge shock.

He wasn’t perfect but it was an incredible culture, one of the premier NFL teams in this time period, and Payton is one of the best NFL HCs of the past 20 years. I don’t see how anyone can deny any of this.
10/15 winning seasons with another at 8-8. Two separate times we won 11+ games for 4 years straight. One Super Bowl, screwed out of another, and let one more get away in 2011. With the Saints of all teams. Name a coach not named Belichick that’s been better.
That’s a winning culture that we may never see again in a New Orleans honestly.

Drew Brees or no Drew Brees, Payton's teams were significantly more disciplined than these teams are under Allen. What we were prior to Jameis going down last year? 5-2?
9-8 on the season with Jameis, Taysom, Book, and Siemian.
