Carr could be our Alex Smith - a bridge to our Mahomes

Just to point out that KC did not tank for Mahomes - they had the 27th pick that draft. Philadelphia didn't tank for Jalen Hurts. Hell, Buffalo didn't tank for Allen, San Diego didn't tank for Herbert. The path to success in the NFL is to build a good winning team, then when you have a shot at a young QB in the draft he can be plugged in to bring the program to the next level (maybe after learning for a season behind the vet). Talk of tanking is stupid - you can't pin your hopes on one wild desperation swing for a QB that might flop or just get ruined by taking a beating on a bad team.

Agreed, if you're throwing a ton of ?? ney at a quarterback that you plan to build around then go for it.
But if you're paying someone over 10 million more than the last guy, I need results, not the hope that we may win one more game and make the playoffs as the loser of a loser division

Going to be harder and harder to build that team though with all the money we push forward AND paying a good not great qb.
If we were a fiscally responsible team I’d be all for Carr. We’re not. We’d basically be a poor man’s version of what we were in Bree’s’ twilight years with less depth.

Statistically, most franchise QB's are first round picks and particularly early first round picks. Sure, the hit rate is low and most likely you wind up with a bust, but that low hit rate is still much higher than later round QB's.
Also, statistically, you aren't competing for championships in this league without a franchise or even often an upper tier QB unless you have an all time great defense. There's a lot of incentive to take that chance at going after a top prospect in the draft because otherwise you probably aren't winning anything anyway.

That may well be true. He may worry about our cap situation or whether there will be a new regime in charge after one season of his new contract. Understandable. I still don't believe we should tank. It just doesn't work reliably in the NFL and could easily put us in a prolonged suck spiral. Gotta play to win.
