New Orleans Saints are sending a message to guard Carl Nicks
August 18, 2010, 10:43 AM
Jeff Duncan, The Times-Picayune

The New Orleans Saints are obviously trying to regain their edge as the regular season approaches.

The coaching staff has instituted a series of disciplinary measures in practice, including running laps for pre-snap infractions or dropped passes.

And on Wednesday they made their first demotion, sending standout left guard Carl Nicks to the second team and promoting Terrence Metcalf to the starting unit.

"It has to be one of two reasons, (either) they feel I'm not good enough any more or they feel the guy behind me is better," said an obviously miffed Nicks afterward. "You've got to ask coach about that."

The Saints appear to be using Nicks as an example in their effort to emphasize an intolerance for mental mistakes. The third-year guard is considered one of the best young linemen in the league so he's a curious pick for discipline.

"It doesn't light my fire," Nicks said. "... I'm confident in my abilities. If the feel I'm not capable of running with the 1s I've got to respect that."

Nicks clearly was not happy about the move. Asked how he was informed of the decision, Nicks said, "I don't really want to get into how they let me know. I'd rather keep it in. You'll have to ask (Coach Sean) Payton or (offensive line coach Aaron) Kromer about that. It's still kind of a shock to me."

It's unclear how long Nicks' demotion will last but it's a safe bet it will only be temporary.

shite, I'd kind of rather it did light a fire. Even if he knows it's temporary, he should definitely be trying to turn some of that anger into production on the field.

Let's hope he's pissed enough to work back up to 1.

Charles Brown also started at LT and Bushrod was next to Nicks on the 2nd team. We demoted the left side.

With the way Tennant dominated the Pats, I wouldn't be surprised if we work him with the ones for a few snaps so he and Drew can get some reps together

Coach Payton knows what he's doing. Nicks must have done something to piss him off.

Brown has NOOOOOOOO fricking business playing guard. I'm 99% certain he would be the smallest in the league.

ETA: Did you change LG to LT or did I misread that?

I'm thinking this will light a fire under his arse despite what Nick's is saying. I think his ego his hurt and he's trying to act like he hasn't come in a little flat, but when given the chance he uses the anger to get back to his last season form. Like the move by the coaches. Everyone has to continue to fight to get better, and if they aren't willing, get to the back of the line. Nicks will be fine.

Just out there speculation, but I could see Nicks being dealt after this season. We have a lot of tough decisions to make with the young talent we have and the cap returning, and since we already have an elite guard and a C of the future, I could see us getting some good draft picks for Nicks to make those decisions easier (see: Porter, Harper, Bushrod, PT, every WR outside of Henderson and Brees being FA's within the next two years). shite, Tennant could impress the Saints at G and make it an even easier decision.

I had to take a look.

Terrence Orlando Metcalf (born January 28, 1978 Clarksdale, Mississippi) 6'4 310lbs is an American football guard for the New Orleans Saints. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football at Mississippi.

Metcalf has also been a member of the Detroit Lions
Picked up June 10 by Saints.

Very interesting. Kromer don't play boyyzz.

When I was at practice Sunday, they took him out for a while when the "1's" were running team drills. You could tell he was pissed at the time, but I didn't know the reason they had taken him out. I guess this is something that has been building for a while.

Yeah. The ideal response would be something like "I had some off days with lots of mental mistakes so I have to get it together and regain my spot". Although I suppose if that were his attitude they wouldn't have felt the need to demote him.
