The interesting player is Harper! Why no talks of restructure yet? Look at where Loomis started with restructures. They have all been Veteran leaders.IMO I would like a younger and faster SS. Just dont like the idea of a S that only does one thing well and when asked to cover is a huge liability.

Isn't a good, run-stopping SS necessary in the Ryan 3-4? In that case, Harper is the perfect fit for the defense the Saints will be running, not much of a reason to restructure or ask for a reduction.

Jenkins on the other hand... not sure how he is going to do next year. I think Harper improves with this defense.

NFL has changed.

in-the-box SS should have basically no value. S now need to have CB coverage ability. Harper is horrible in coverage at times and at his best, average. How many career INTs does he have btw? 5?

So cut Will Smith, you realize we will need to add at least 3 guys to play DE. 4 potentially if Hicks is used as a nose tackle.

When I say will smith is an ideal 3-4, I don't think he is one of the best in the NFL. I'm saying he has the body type & savvy to do it.

I like how people sit here and say "he can't hold a block" blah blah. Like you people are watching for that? shite that isn't even his main job in the 4-3 package. Most of the skills used in that defense ARE NOT applicable to what he would be doing as a 3-4 DE. It's just not.

Can he hold blocks? Yes I think so. Can he set the edge? Yes, most definitely. He has always played the edge run very well, even recently. Can he rush the passer in passing situations? Yes. We know he's not the 11 sack guy he once was, but most 3-4 DEs aren't need for this. You have JJ Watt, then you have every other 3-4 DE that no one knows the name of.

So if we keep Will, we only need to sign 2?

Like I said, not sure the plan for hicks, but if he plays NT then Jordan is the only guy on the roster that can play 3-4 DE. You do the math.

I'm hoping they are not asking Smith to restructure to play him at OLB.

Tyrun Walker, Tom Johnson, Braylon Broughton, Jay Richardson are all signed ready to compete in training camp... keeping will or not, we're going to probably need to add some pieces in this puzzle.

I honestly don't see much of a talent drop off from will smith to tyrunn walker. Even if we kept Will, your math says we still need to add 2 more pieces. Will is not worth his contract any more. Obviously the saints feel he's worth something since they are offering something but I don't see any drop off moving forward if he was replaced with Walker, and thats not even discussing Hicks' real possibility on the bookend assuming we are going to keep Bunkley's contract on the books.

Has tyrun walker even played an NFL snap? How can you say there is no talent drop off?

He showed good potential in preseason, young has good energy, pretty stout, has good size and could add a few more LB's, I think he's going to make for a solid rotational player. I really think hicks is penciled in the bookend spot and we're arguing about depth at this point.

wwl take

Now they’re down to $128.2 million. And factoring in a $2.7 million cap adjustment, the Saints sit at $125.5 million in dedicated cap dollars. The cap ceiling will be anywhere between a reported $121.1 million and $123 million. In other words, at the low end, New Orleans is about $4.4 million over while only $2.5 million over at the high end.

Safety Roman Harper is set to cost the Saints $7.15 million against the cap. Running back Pierre Thomas would cost the team nothing if the team let go of him before the league year begins. Linebackers Chris Chamberlain and Will Herring also could find themselves in precarious waters as releasing them could save the Saints nearly $2 million in cap space.

Cut Roman assuming he doesn't restructure to our liking
Cut Will Smith
Cut herring
Cut herring again just to be cautious
Cut Chamberlain
Cut Pierre
Ask Jabari for a modest restructure
Restructure Hartley or show him the door (blues, i don't need 2008 statistics)
Keep Ivory
Promote Cadet

?Chamberlain could be a valuable backup and special teams player.

You stay the hell away from Pierre.

I'm fine with everything else you said.

Will Herring

And we have a winner!!! The guy is a good special teams player but pretty much sucks at linebacker. Maybe a scheme change would help him....couldn't hurt. Wouldn't it save about $665,000 on the cap to get rid of him?

kind of sucks for Chamberlain but how much a difference could he have made last year? I'm guessing not that much. Don't think he really fits with what we're going to do now but we'll see...

Hopefully Herring is shown the door.

He's about as pure 4-3 OLBacker as they come. Came with Spags, nothing against Chambs but he doesn't fit OLB in a 3-4 at all. Could be a decent ST player but so can others.

PT, i love Pierre but putting on my cap hat... why pay him if we don't use him properly. He became a ghost lots of last year with not using him. We want to ride the ingram train so all fricking aboard, Ivory is too good of a runner to let walk as a RFA, he's cheap and good. Cadet seems worthy and still got sproles.
