There's actually an analytical answer to this question and it would be that you should punt there.
It would be an easy formula to calculate. I'd say Lutz's chances of making that 56 yard FG are about 40%.
It would only be worth the risk if his chances of making the kick were at ~60% or above (with the alternative expected outcome being Carolina starting first and 10 at their own 13 if we had punted).

the correct move would have been to punt

This kicker has been money lately, good call

What's his % at 56 yards this year?

Actually I didn't know it was 4th and 3. FG is easily worst option there.
1. Go for it (50/50)
2. Try to draw offsides / take delay / punt
3. Punt without attempt to draw offsides
4. 56 yard FG attempt (40/60)

I feel like a fake punt to the upback, fake punt w/ Moorstead running are both somwhere between 3 & 4.

Yah agree, especially in that situation where the Panthers wouldn't expect it. Nobody really expects a fake punt from a team who is ahead by 2 scores.

It would put us up 3 scores with 9min to go. I dont understand what you dont understand.

I wanted them to go for it, but I'm not a coach, player, or analyst in the NFL so for all I know it would have been the play that cost us the game

He’s been kicking well
He has been and he needs to nail one of these 55+ yard kicks. I think that once he does, he will start to be money from that distance to 60. He clearly has the talent and the leg strength. I think he was just a little too jacked up to make the kick and pulled it a little bit.

The right call is the one that was made because they won. The logical call in that situation seems to lean more toward punt. However, I don't have an issue with the 56 yard try.
If it were me, I would have punted.

He missed the FG....what don't you understand about that?

Has he tried a FG of that distance in a open stadium before?
Posted on 9/25/17 at 4:27 pm to tigerterrace
I agree w/ the call because personally I think Lutz is the 2nd best kicker in the NFL
Posted on 9/25/17 at 5:03 pm to Rand AlThor
I hope you are correct, but kickers should be evaluated by distance...
i.e. Success inside 45 yards vs. success at 56 yards+ are two very different animals

If every coach knew what was going to happen before they made the call, we could all be coaches. Hindsight is 20/20. If he makes the kick, its a good call. If he missed it, like he did, people like you say stupid shite.

No shite dude...
That's why it was a stupid call.
You play the percentages, field position, and game situations.
It was a boneheaded call.
It's not like he hasn't done it before.
But saying it was a good call when he missed the FG is really effing stupid!

CSP has faith in Lutz. With any other kicker in the past, he would have punted that after blowing a timeout trying to get them offsides. I would have preffered punting it as well as the defense was playing, but I still think kicking it is better than going for it considering what was going on at that time.
Lutz absolutely drilled the 50 yarder before then and this one just didnt work out. It was a good time to give lutz that shot imo. Like i said, if he makes it, we go up 3 scores and CSP has faith he can hit one of those later in the year.

Actually, my understanding is that the "analytic answer" is that you should never punt at all, and go for the first down on every fourth down..
..and if I had a coach who did that I'd try to brain him. Figuratively, of course.
