Drew Brees said he and the Saints have not discussed a long-term contract extension in about two months. Brees said he is "not stressing" over his contract, but he does not want negotiations to drag into the season. "I don't like to talk about contract during the season," Brees said. "So there's a deal to be done now, and then if it doesn't get done now, then there will be a different deal to get done at the end of the year." The reason Brees gives for the deadline is not wanting his contract to be a distraction during the season. That may be true, but this pronouncement has the added benefit of putting pressure on the Saints to get something done. It would be a shock if the two sides did not come to an agreement before the season.

"I hope those discussions will take place again," Brees said. "If they don't, they don't, and I'll play the season with the same approach whether I had a long-term deal or not." Brees said he wants to get a deal done, but won't stress about it. And once the season begins, he won't talk about it.

"I'd love a long-term deal to get done, something that would lock me up for the rest of my career," he said. "I plan on playing for a few more years and obviously I expect them to be here.

"I'm not stressing about it at all, honestly. I really haven't given it a lot of thought since we were talking about it, maybe, a month-and-a-half or two ago."

Does the Benson mental instability issue play into this at all? Will the negotiations speed up once the family tiff gets cleaned up in court?

I think it's possible Brees is waiting to see if Rita wins and they send Tom to the looney bin.

I guess I don't really understand this whole thing. Is it Brees' job to negotiate his contract or is it the Saints' job to approach him about it?

This is 100% negotiating tactic.

His agent was playing hardball so both sides broke off talks. Now Brees is saying (slightly over)pay me now or (mega over)pay me even more later.

if we have to wait until after the season to negotiate this contract it's going to cost so much more than it would've prior to.

You can't be this clueless. Even if there is some major reversal (Benson is two for two with no sign of that changing) and Benson is declared incompetent Rita still has ZERO control of the team. She would just get paid off of it.

Also it was just ruled that Benson can swap out the NON VOTING ownership shares in the trusts and that promissory notes are totally a legit way to do so.

The only question is if the current proposed value is equal, but Benson can always up it.

At this point i'd rather just let it play out over next summer. If Brees is still his HOF self then you pay him that way.

The bottomline is he doesn't want to go anywhere and as long as he's still playing at a high level the Saints don't want him going anywhere. The deal will get done.

He's just playing the game. These comments are being put out there to ensure that the heat is put on management and make sure if it doesn't get done, the Saints look like the bad guys.

FTR, I still think a deal gets done.

Definitely just playing the game. Same as in 2012 when Loomis and his agent, Condon, played chicken all the way up to the franchise tag deadline and BOOM Brees signed.

This has all happened before.

I'm not worried at all.

We had the franchise tag as a reasonable tool last time

I think that he has a 99% chance of being a saint, but why take the risk

Why wouldn't we have it this time?

So much honor in being named the franchise player

Rita ... would just get paid off of it.

would Brees accept the proposal if the Saints were still associated with her? He clearly is on Tom's side.

Because his cap number would be 43 million dollars this time under the tag.

Not sure I agree in Brees' situation. Maybe total contract money it will cost more, as there is a cap increase every year, but I think it's more beneficial for the team to wait until next offseason.

With a player like Armstead, whose value can really increase over the course of another season, I would agree. Also with Armstead, he would be more of a threat to leave in FA than Brees is. How much can Brees' value really increase this season? He had one of his best seasons last year, so his value will likely be the same next offseason. Knock on wood, but another losing season, or an injury/decline in play and his value will be lower. I seriously hope none of those happen, but you never know.

I'm not a contract expert, but I feel like an extension this season would have been done with the goal of gaining cap space this offseason, while adding a bigger hit towards the end of his contract. We'll have more flexibility next offseason in regards to cap space to structure his contract.

His value would be higher because he would be able to compete on the open market

Then, it just takes 1 team willing to pay him an absurd amount to drive it up

Not exactly. We had to use the franchise tag on him which cost us Carl Nicks.

A deal will be done as long as he doesn't try to squeeze the financial life out of the team.
