re: BPA vs "need"

this is all i will say (and this isn't a respone to anyone inparticular)
When Sean Payton teamed with Mickey Loomis, this team was a complete nightmare that needed to be upgraded pretty much across the board.
Every pick the saints made was preety much a "need", mainly because almost every position could be upgraded.
They kept this philosphy for years, making smart picks in the draft and signing high charcter free agents (without breaking the bank).
The result: A team that gelled together as a unit. A team that loves to play for New Orleans. And a team that I believe will now contend for years.
Every year the saints draft. And every year the same people freak out and hate every pick. And everyone has a right to feel the way they do.
But...
This regime has taken a horrible team to the Superbowl in 4 years. I trust the front office and their picks. I am content with this draft.

i just don't see how our coaches can be solid in him. how much has he been able to show?
Last night Payton said they liked Washington but didnt think he was worth the 32nd overall, but also didnt think he'd fall to 64. Im assuming they might have tried to move up and couldnt get anything done

The guy went at the end of the 3rd. I think that's a great example of a reach...and drafting for need.
Personally, I think reaching for a guys whose rated 30 picks lower than where you draft is a recipe for disaster.
Claussen was ranked as the 8th best player in the draft... where did he go? Does this mean he isn't good or that other teams were drafting what they needed?

not exactly a great measure on being a "reach"
It's a perfect example...just like Washington. The Saints weren't willing to take Washington at 32 (as per Payton) but would have at 64. Passing on Bowman at 64 is a very similar situation when you consider he wasn't taken until 91.
The other factor is that they may have had Brown rated much higher than 64 (which is likely).
Any Saints fan knows we need a LB (maybe two). But, the draft is not the only opportunity to fill that hole. It's quite possible that the coaching staff didn't think the guys available in the 2nd would fill the hole and will instead try to find a veteran either via free agency or via trade.

I agree the Saints could have/should have picked up quality pass-ruhers with the early rounds.
The Saints could have moved up realistically without selling the farm and got Dan Williams, and added a quality LB like Washington or Bowman in additon to picking up a backup CB and C/OG in this draft.
Still it's very hard to knock the talent level of the BPA picks they did select without coming off as a know-nothing retard. So basically, this was a quality draft for the Saints.

they drafted good value, but our first 3 picks are literally 3rd stringers in positional groups that are strengths
that's the question mark

no, not really. Washington wouldnt have been a huge reach. Even Payton said he knew he wouldnt be there at 64
Im not sure you understand that every team doesnt draft BPA
Bowman dropping doesnt mean he wasnt worthy of being drafted higher.
it just means that teams didn't need a LB

point is, it guarantees someone there.
waiting out on a player cut or a potential trade doesnt guarantee anything

Haha, I just noticed NFL.com's Saints draft tracker has RB, DL, LB, S as our positions of need, yet we only picked one player at any of those positions (Even though drafting Robinson could always mean Jenkins would address the S need). It just goes to show you that no matter how many mock draft websites start up every year, and how much excitement everyone gets from predicting the draft, it is all useless.

it is all useless
It was useful in figuring out the Saints didn't really address needs this draft.
Whether u see it as good or bad is up to you but I don't think anyone could argue we didn't address areas of need

That is totally subjective. Your opinion of our areas of need could be totally different from mine and more importantly different from Payton, Loomis, Williams, and Benson.

Our front office's philosophy is to address needs through free agency before the draft so that we can draft BPA.
This year, we weren't able to do that because of the top 8 rules related to the uncapped year. Because of that, I expected the staff to draft a DT or LB in the first two rounds. I can't deny that I'm disappointed that we didn't, even though I really like the players we got (though I'm not sure we got good value for Robinson).
I still believe that the front office will trade for an impact player in one of those positions. Jammal Brown is going to be traded and we all know it. We got Shockey two years ago just before training camp. Last year, we traded for David Thomas even later, right before the start of the regular season.
By the way, I'm not at all surprised that we didn't draft a DE. With Brown, Charleston, McCray, and Wilkerson, we have invested enough at that position that we should be able to find one guy who can perform well.
