Morestead was clearly need

But who says Ellis, Jenkins, Harper, Nicks, and Evans werent the BPA on the Saints board when they drafted them?

nobody was mad about nicks. he was a late round, boom/bust guy. major athlete with major character problems

he was a 5th round pick, we needed OL depth at that point. He was also saw as a guy that could play RT

Nesbit gets suspended, and Nicks started 12 games as a rookie. The rest is history.

Payton also took over a team that was 3-13. Interestingly enough, just about every position had a need. We won the fricking Super Bowl. Of course we still have needs but no where near the amount in '06 -'09.

We also do not know how our in house players compare to the players on the board in the eyes of our coaching staff.

We need to get used to these kinds of drafts. This is exactly how the Colts, Pats, and Steelers draft.

Yes Nesbit was the clear starter until he got suspended. Nicks came in and it was clear he was just the better player

i think thats far too many players to be coincidence

Ellis was traded up to get.

Jenkins was taken when our DBs were "in shambles" before last season

Harper, clearly a need

Evans started as a rookie

Nicks started as a rookie and was taken for depth in the 5th round

its pretty obvious it was need. Need+VALUE. good strategy

our roster wasn't that bad, and we addressed many of our needs in FA

we went 13-3 that year and still kept drafting for needs in 2007 (we had a shitty draft that year)

This is EXACTLY my point.

that strategy worked out so well, and yes, we had some holes, but look at where we are now!!!!!!!

why not patch the other holes or at least add depth on the defensive side of the ball and build up that unit???? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh(loud scream lol)

I'm still a bit confused how Nicks was a "need" pick for "depth," which is what you don't like about this entire draft

I didn't say don't DRAFT for need, I said don't REACH for need. Usama was probably a reach, I don't remember too many other guys we've drafted where the immediate consensus here was we went too early on a player.

even 2nd round picks like Usama Young, i didnt even mention. He was a need pick.

Demarrio Pressely in the 3rd round.

anyone remember Antonio Pittman???? BPA pick

I don't understand. Are you using Usama Young and Demario Pressley as examples of need picks that were successful?

As for Pittmsn, I'm not sure what your point is. Are you suggesting that Pittman wouldn't have busted if we had a stronger need? That's counterintuitive.

The bottom line is BPA will fail if you do a poor job is evaluating the players (i.e. Pittman). Drafting for need will fail if you continuously reach for players and don't get maximum value out of your draft picks.

We did sign a bunch of band aid players in FA, outside of Brees.

We finished 10-6 the next year with a gimmick D. See Gary Gibbs 07 and 08.

And this doesn't describe where we are and are going as a franchise?
