It’s less than an $400k cap difference between this contract and an UDFA punter.

I don't get the melt, its below average pay for an average punter.

because most people fail to understand just how high the market pays regular average players today.

they see what in reality is a cheap contract, and they go OMG why they overpaid him !!!

What’s your expertise in deciding Gilkin is an average punter?

Gilkin is a good punter.

Considering he's bottom 10 in nearly every stat a punter is judged on, I'd say he's an average punter at best.

Of course, every NFL punter is "GOOD". When compared to the rest of the NFL punters he is an "AVERAGE" NFL punter.

The Saints viewed him as their next Morstead, a guy that will be their punter for the next decade and they never have to worry about. He was inconsistent last year but his talent is undeniable. If he plays well this year they will lock him up on a 3 or 4 year deal. He can be a top 5 punter in the league.

He really needs a bounce back year. Thankfully, he started to look like his rookie year self towards the end of last season.

Only 34% of his punts were even returned. Top half of the league in net avg, 4th most inside the 20, 3rd most downed, 5th most fair caught. No TDs, none blocked.

He had the 8th most punts in the league this year and 3rd most in 2021. He’s not the problem

Except he’s not.
He’s top 15 in avg.
12th in avg net yards which is more important.
8th in net yards.
4th in inside the 20.
Only had 232 yards of total return yards for the season.
He’s not bottom ten in any of the stats I found.

He doesn’t kick as long, but he kicks high with longer hang time than the average NFL punter. This allows for the coverage team to cover better. When I worked with TMac the special teams coordinator for the New York Giants, this is what he taught his punters to do.
