I thought it was 35-7. either way it was a disaster on the defense. Archie and the O got 35 on a good Raider D
You may be right. I think we scored a defensive TD early in the 3rd Quarter (a Joe Federspiel (sic) interception or fumble return) and it looked to be a route. The Dome was going crazy. I was a kid and I don't recall ever feeling so deflated since that night. I learned a valuable life lesson that evening.

Archie really was an excellent QB. You can see that all the acquired wisdom he amassed working for the worst team in the NFL has been passed on to his sons.
I don't believe that Archie was as good as Staubach or Bradshaw, but he's easily one of the top 10 QB's of the 70's/early 80's.
Those of you that are too young to remember the teams that Archie played on really need to understand exactly how inept the Saints were at that time. It's almost hard to explain it, because I don't think you will actually believe it.
You just have to trust the older folks on this one. The Saints were the worst team, year in and year out, that the NFL has EVER seen. You know how bad the Oakland Raiders are now? Imagine that, only with less talented players, and an owner who is nowhere near as sane as Al Davis.
That's close to how bad they were.
Draft Day was like a joke for Saints fans. The GM's and John Mecom would just piss away pick after pick after pick. They would trade away high picks for dinosaurs and never-heard-of's. Then they would select players who you wouldn't have ever drafted, even on a dare. The Saints played the game with one arm tied behind their back 24/7/365.
Without Archie Manning, we would have had very little to cheer about.

Well said. No question that he was our lone bright spot and the team with Henry Childs, Wes Chandler, Ike Harris, Chuck Muncie, and Tony Galbreath actually led the NFL in total offense. They were fun to watch even though the defense was awful.

28-7 at the half, Ken Borderlon intercepted Stabler and returned it for a touchdown 35-7. The route was on and devastation awaited.

there you go, I thought it got to 35-7 before the onslaught.

the Saints had their best years, 7-9 and 8-8 in 78 and 79.

Ken Bordelon!!! That's right. I was correct about the halftime score though. Not bad after 30 years of boozing.

Bill Walsh was often quoted as saying that if he had Archie on his 49ers teams in their heyday, he would have won just as many, if not more, SBs than they had under Montana.
Put it this way - if you watched the LSU game last Saturday and saw the constant pressure that JJ was under, that was Archie's whole carrer in New Orleans, save the 78 and 79 seasons. Those incidentally, were his best with the Saints.
To me, the ultimate Archie highlight was when he was with the Oliers. The botched snap, chase the ball down 20 yards behind the line, then throw an underhanded pass to Mike Renfro that nearly goes the distance play.
Watch that highlight sometimes and you'll get an idea of what most of Archie's time in New Orleans was like.

Archie was so much more athletic than either Peyton or Eli. He was more like a Steve Young if I had to compare him to anyone. Consider the source but I remember Matt Millen saying that if Archie had played on a good team he would have set the standard by which we judge quarterbacks. Anyone remember that game in the Dome when the Saints defeated the Vikings and Tommy Myers had a pick 6? What a game that was!!! That was Archie at his best.

Manning played on some crappy Saints teams since it was an expansion team, no different than the Bucs when they started.
Manning has no complaints - he's made a nice living off the New Orleans Saints considering salaries back then were pretty pitiful. He's whored the Saints out more than any player in organization history.
You can bet your bottom dollar if the Saints would've been in position to select Peyton or Eli he would've pulled that same crap he pulled with the Chargers!

So what. The owners have way too much leverage over the players. Yes, the top few picks get overblown contracts, but until the players get guaranteed contracts i am all for any player doing anything he feels necessary to put himself where he feels he has the best chance to succeed (even if it happens to be a Saint's draftee).

I only remember Archie playing in Southern Siding commercials, but he must certainly still be a little bitter for wasting all that athleticism on the worst team in the NFL.
shite, didn't he mentor Eli in turning down San Diego and forcing a trade? And I don't even remember San Diego being at the bottom at the time.

What is the deal with douchebags who claim to be Saints fans but dis Archie?
Archie has nothing to do with the Saints anymore, so why can't I hate him. If he and he sons hate the state of Louisiana then stay the frick out.

Not going to LSU = hating Louisiana? Got it.
Please kill yourself or stay on the Rant, whichever is more convenient.

This just in! LSU =/= The State of LA.

I never once mentioned LSU.. You guys are the one that brought that up. Drew Brees and Reggie Bush and Warrick Dunn have done more for the State of Louisiana that Peyton, Eli and Archie ever did. Their foundations have put money into a state that needed it.
In 2006 just 1 year removed from Katrina Peyton Manning decides that 1 million dollars would be better spent on "go toward enhancing the Neyland-Thompson football complex and that the rest go toward improving the Neyland Stadium locker room" Lets give more to the spoiled football players. LINK
What about the city he grew up in? Oh yeah I forgot about the Photo Op he and Eli had on the runway of the 1 plane load of food they sent.
Here is a link to the Drew Brees Foundation. Its loaded with projects for the state of Louisiana LINK
Go to Peyton MAnnings and count up how much he has done for Louisiana compared to Brees. Find me somthing for Louisiana.. I really want to see it.
Call be a ranter P&G wearing if you like but its all of you how cant look past the Archie is great glasses.

Dont put this back on me. The thread is about "How great the Mannings Are" and once someone points out that they are not as great people make them out to be they get attacked.
I do my part and if I could do more I would.
