for horribly managing the salary cap and just throwing away money for years now. Especially with a HOF QB and you are wasting his final years.

After releasing C.J. Spiller, the Saints are now carrying ~$40M of dead money on their 2016 salary cap.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) September 13, 2016
Almost 1/3 of the cap in players not on the team. The Saints almost have enough dead money to start another football team.

That is what's called wasting three to five precious years of a Hall of Fame quarterback that you can never ever get back.

We've shed the dead real quickly and will give this franchise a future while Brees still under center. The ignorant bitching is laughable. Everyone was fine with Spiller being dead weight on bench but not cut.

And to think Benson is letting Loomis get control in the Pelicans organization too. My god, what does Loomis have on Benson?

Do we have the most dead money of any team? Is it even close?

If Benson wasn't so old and just disconnected from the team, Loomis would be gone and Payton as well. Not calling for Payton yet, but Loomis for sure has long out stayed his welcome.

Listening to the radio now and it's really sickening how incredible Brees played...and they still lost.

I'm really sick of people constantly defending Loomis and his terrible decisions.

Looking at you, Lester.

I think I while everyone was puzzled at why spiller was benched, we all thought he would be playing soon. For the saints to outright release him, and take the cap hits, just shows this front office will never learn.

Most go-ahead TD passes in 4Q in a game team lost
1. Drew Brees - 15
2. Dan Marino - 8
2. Tony Romo - 8

Or have gained a competitive advantage in absorbing The bad contracts this year while still maintaining a competitive team and freeing up space to get new talent next year while also locking up Unger and Armstead etc

Maybe that's why Brees was willing to agree to a mere one year extension.

They have no one to answer to any longer that's the problem. Tom Benson is not involved at all. When is the last time you have heard him make a statement regarding the Saints or Pelicans?

I really underestimated how important ownership was until Benson lost his mind. Just feel like there's no accountability.

Legit question as I don't really know how financials work with all of this stuff. What do we gain other than a roster spot by cutting CJ loose? Anything?

Loomis is certainly not without some blame for this mess, but he's not the architect of this unstable project...that's on Payton.
Loomis is told by Payton who he wants on the team and it's Loomis' job to sign them.
Where Loomis fails is he didn't do his job; he didn't have the confidence or experience to just say "No".
