Looking up Chuck Muncie in the Countdown Thread this morning (18months in federal jail) reminded me of these. Who ya got?

First ones that come to mind to me (prison not required)...

Albert Connell- His legacy on Wiki: In the spring of 2001, the New Orleans Saints signed him to a five-year, $13 million contract that included a $2.5 million signing bonus. In 2001, he played 12 games for the Saints, recording 12 receptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns. His future in the NFL was cut short when he was accused of stealing from Deuce McAllister. He allegedly stole $4,000 from his former Saints teammate and was released from the team. He never played in the NFL again.

Russell Erxleben- I don't blame him for the team overdrafting him ridiculously at #11 overall. Still 84months sentence is pretty impressive nastiness: In 1999, following an investigation by the Texas State Securities Board and the Internal Revenue Service, Erxleben pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, mail fraud and money laundering, and a second count for securities fraud, in connection with misleading statements regarding the past performance of Austin Forex. On September 18, 2000, Erxleben was sentenced by United States District Court Judge James R. Nowlin to 84 months in prison, and ordered to pay a total of $28 million in restitution and a one million dollar fine. Erxleben's lawyers, the law firm of Locke, Liddell & Sapp, settled a related lawsuit for $22m in 2000.

Kevin Houser- somewhat a victim losing $125K himself he prolly would be voted on the list by the current team. He led coaches and teammates into $1.9mil worth of fraudulent investments, including Grant, a former defensive end for the Saints, paid $425,000. Payton paid $144,000. Saints quarterback Drew Brees invested $100,000. Former Saints star quarterback Archie Manning and Shockey, a tight end who played for the Carolina Panthers last season, both paid $80,000. This is still in litigation BTW.

Don Reese- in the late 70s there was a lot of cocaine use going on with the Saints. None was prolly bigger than Reese. HERE is a 1982 SI story with some details...
Reese said in his article that because of an epidemic of cocaine involvement, the Saints were a "horror show" that season. Both Dick Nolan and Dick Stanfel, the team's head coaches in 1980, responded that they were unaware of any drug use—which just shows how little some coaches know. One of Reese's former Saint teammates, Chuck Muncie, although denying Reese's claim that he used cocaine following his trade to San Diego in 1981, confirmed that he used the drug in New Orleans and estimated that 60% of his teammates had done the same; Reese had put the figure at "more than 50%." Last week the New Orleans Times-Picayune/States-Item reported that as many as a dozen present and former Saints had told federal investigators that they had bought cocaine, in some cases from former New Orleans Running Back Mike Strachan, who was indicted last week for a second time on charges of selling the drug. One of those mentioned by the newspaper was Saint Running Back George Rogers, the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner and the leading NFL rusher last year. Rogers reportedly admitted to a federal grand jury that he spent more than $10,000 on cocaine during the season. Muncie was said to have told authorities that he'd put Rogers in touch with a dealer and lent him money to buy cocaine the night before the Pro Bowl in Honolulu last January and that Rogers had knocked on Muncie's hotel room door to borrow more money for cocaine at 4 a.m. The Pro Bowl began at 11 a.m.

Wayne Gandy- this one is just personal for me. He represented all that was wrong with the Haslett era by having a recliner in the lockerroom... Gandy Meets Payton- One of former coach Jim Haslett's favorites was Gandy, who fancied himself a team leader. When Payton saw that Gandy had a big recliner in front of his locker, the new coach asked a locker-room attendant, "Did we buy this for him or did he?" Told that Gandy had bought the recliner, Payton said, "Then take it out of there, put it in his car and tell him if it's still here tomorrow, we'll throw it away."
Shortly thereafter, the Saints threw Gandy away, in a manner of speaking, dealing him to Atlanta.

Jonathan Sullivan- don't really know about him as a person but he appeared to be more of a don't give a frick fatass after getting a big paycheck than a draft misjudgement bust (although maybe they could have vetted better). Trading up for him at #6 overall then getting 16 starts with 1.5 sacks in 3 years contends for worst NOLA draft pick of alltime. The sneaking off to eat fried chicken in the press room will live in infamy. Last heard from in 2006 busted for pot and having weapons in his car (prolly looking for a chicken joint).
